Custom Wedding Dress?

Custom Wedding Dress?

Does anyone know where I could get a custom made wedding dress? I am only 5'0 and it is hard finding a dress that is proportionally correct, and I know I'm going to spend a fortune on getting a dress hemmed and with some of the dresses, if it's hemmed, the style will be lost. So, I am interested in finding out more about a custom- one of a kind- to fit me dress. If you know of any place please let me know.

Anne Barge gowns are made for petite women....also FYI most designers have petite and tall sizes. I was also considering a custom gown, but got scared off from so many horror stories. I ended up going to eve of milady.

A lot of designers make dresses for petite women.

Also, I know Macy's does something called a hollow to hem. This is where they measure you from your neck to the floor, allowing the dress to be made to your proprortions and also the correct length. I'm sure a lot of other stores/designers do this as well.

I'm 5'5' and I still used this b/c there's beading on my skirt. This way they do not have to worry about ruining the bead patters during alterations.

Look into this. It will save you loads on having a dress custom made.

Where are you from? Valentina Bridal in Brooklyn makes beautiful custom made dresses.

You can get a lot of dresses measured 'hollow to hem'. So the designer will just make your dress for your height so when it comes in you don't have to hem it. My dress had a lot of lace and beadwork and there would have been no good way to hem it, so we ordered it made for my height.

I would just get a dress hallow to hem, this way nothing is taken away from the design.

I am 5'2 and did have to get it hemmed, alterations are capped at bridal salons so no matter the amount of work they do it can't go past the capped price. The design still showed great and nothing was taken away from it.

Re: Custom Wedding Dress?

My dress is a Casablanca. I picked a sample dress that was similiar to what i wanted but they customize it completly, for example i changed the front and back cuts, the color on the bottom, added buttons to the back, etc. They took my measurements and are custom making the dress (I am 5'1) It was a cheaper route than going full custom.

hope that helps!

I am 4'10 and I was able to get my dress custom made at a trunk show I attended @ Kleinfeild's. Typically at a Trunk Show the designer is present and can go ahead and ok a dress to be made specific to your measurements. My dress is trumpet and could not be altered properly to keep the form because I am so petite, so the designer ok'd the order to bring the flare at the bottom 4 inches up.

So my advice is attend as many trunk shows as you can. You get discounts and can get dresses customized to your liking.

Re: Custom Wedding Dress?

i have to agree with what everyone else said. all the bridal shops i tried dresses on at either offered to have it sized hollow to hem or order in a petite size. custom making should be a last resort. there are people out there who are shorter then 5'0' & i am sure they don't all get custom made dresses. plus is you are 5'0' & wear 2' heels you will be fine.

Re: Custom Wedding Dress?

Definitely go with a local seamstress/tailor in your area. Take a walk one of these days and see which shops offer these services and find out how much they charge before you do your measurements. I got my wedding gown made on Ebay which was a replica of a Milady gown as part of 2006 collection. The only thing I had to do was go to a local tailor to get my measurements and submit back to the seller. In less than a month, I got my wedding gown that fit me except like an inch or so since I lost a pound or two towards my wedding. It really depends on where you live, in New York, I know there is a great one on E. 22nd Street that does custom gowns/dresses. There's also two more on the block near Baruch College. If you are interested in the name and address, please FM me.
