Re: cute places to eat around union square?
I don't know the city at ALL, but FH & I are going to 21 Club tonight and it looks REALLY good.
Sorry if that was completely unhelpful, but like I said, I have no idea where Union Square is. I'm a country gal living next to the biggest city in the world lol

Chocolate by the Bald Man is nice. You may have to wait a while for a seat but the food is good. It's on Broadway between East 13th and 14th Street.
There's Rosa Mexicana on East 18th Street.

Oooh I love:
Republic Havana Central Wined Up (which is on Broadway between 20 & 21-its a wine bar)
But my FAVORITE place is a tapas restaurant next to ABC carpet and home-its on 20 between broadway and park-it has tons and tons of chandeliers (from ABC) everywhere. It's SO ROMANTIC.
It's called Pipa. Totally affordable and the atmosphere is just gorgeous. Sometimes they have a solo flamenco guitar player in the evenings.

I second this!!!
Also try www.opentable.com. Whenever FH and I go into the city we look for a new place to eat and that site is very helpful!

Sala 19 has the best tapas and is very cute. My other favorites people already mentioned (Chat n'chew, Havana, Blue Water). Pipa is very hit or miss but great white sangria. Republic is a noodle place with huge communal sitting tables. Not sure if I'd describe it as cute! A little further north you have Sushi Samba (slightly overpriced but very atmospheric), Blue Smoke, (great barbeque and very atmospheric) and Dos Caminos.

I would recommnd ' Pipa ' . It's a Sanish tapas place , food is great as well as the atmosphere.
There is also a cozy little wine bar in the area : 'Bar Jarmon'
If you are in the mood for Sushi, check out ' Haru' , there are a few of them in the city, but for some reason , the best one , I think is in the Union Square area.
