Is this true that their bridal dresses are cut smaller that the bridemaid dresses...
I am asking b/c normally there is a one size difference between me and my sister, her being a little larger, b/c she is taller. But she just tried on her BM dress, and she is the same size in BM dress as I am in Bridal (i.e. the same #)... The sales person in the store said that the bridemaid dresses are cut normal, but the bridal are cut small, and I just wanted to check if this was true or if I ordered my dress in the wrong size (perhaps I was bloated)?
Thanks

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
Brides gowns are always cut smaller, I think they do it to drive the bride crazy!
Edited to say, that's everywhere, not just Davids Bridal

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
My david's dress is a size 10. I am usually a size 6 in regular clothes. Bridal sizes are very small. I even tried on some dresses (other manufacturers) and I had to wear a sixe 12.

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
They are definitely cut smaller. I asked someone at a bridal shop why they do that-- and she said it is because it gives the company a better chance at getting people to be over size 18-then they can charge more.

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
Thanks for all your replies, you all ordered from davids, right?
I am asking specifically about Davids bridal, because they're not the same as your normal bridal stores, so please let me know if you guys all ordered from that chain.
Thank you again... sorry, I was just a bit confused, and I thought that small sizing applied to BM dresses as well.

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
I wore a Davids bridal 8 when I was a bm but needed a 12 when I tried on wedding dresses there.

Thanks, dcbride, that's what I was trying to figure out... Ok, now I am less concerned and I'll just wait patiently till my dress gets here.

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
As people say, its not just Davids...it's all manufacturers. They ****! They try to make us feel fat....Since most bridal shops carry size 10 samples it makes life even more difficult!
I ended up with a size 12 Paloma Blanca - I am a size 6 petite normally.

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
For my friends wedding in April I am a BM and got my dress at David's Bridal. Even though I am size 0-2 they told me I should order a size 4 top and size 6 skirt. I guess it's so they can make money on alteration charges. I got my bridal gown at Macy's and it is 2 pieces and they ordered me a size 6 as well so I don't think it's just Davids.

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
I got my bridal dress at Davids. I am normally a size 0-2 also and I got the bridal dress in size 2. It fits, and I mean IT FITS. No gaining weight for the next 10 months!!!!

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
Betty, did the David's you went have a size 2? None of the dresses I tried on were available in 2 in the Brooklyn store, only in 4 and up, and most of them fit anyway, but not tightly fit, a little bit loose. I am normally a 2, but never a 0, so I guess 4 would be the right size, save for a little bit of size alterations comes june.

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
Hi alina! I went to Carle Place and no, they didn't have size 2. They had to order it. They told me it would take 12 weeeks and it came in about 3! I kept trying on size 4 too and they had to pull it back with those clips. The size 2 fits, REALLY FITS. I'm not kidding if I gain ANY weight I'm in trouble!!! They said I have an inch on the sides that they could let out if need be. WHich dress did you get? Mine is 5266.

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
Betty, your dress is so pretty, I love chiffon. How long is the train? I ordered 5868 in late august, but its still not here I'll give them a call once the three month deadline comes. I was scared to order a 2 without trying, so worst case scenario, the dress will have to be taken in in the sides.

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
Thanks. I love yours too, it's so delicate and pretty My train is not too, too long but long enough (if that is an answer). It's very pretty though because the bead work is sparkly and borders the whole train. When I rodered the size 2, they told me if it didn;t fit I could reorder a size 4, they would just keep the size 2 in the store. Now that I took it home though, it's mine!!! Are you getting it altered there? Did they say what it would cost. I've heard they are expensive. I need it to be hemmed, the straps taken in, and bustled. That's all I need so I may just get it done there.

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
Betty, I plan to do a huge amount of alterations with the bottom and the train of the dress, and I couldn't trust davids with that. I will bring my dress to Karin Yngesvotter for alterations, and even with her they'll probably run close to 300, or may be even more. I won't do the bustle, b/c its a cathedral train and then my behind will look huge (at least the way david's showed me). I plan to cut the whole train off, then cut the train in like half, so that it woudl be a shorter train, and make that shorter train attached on snaps, so that I can take it off during the reception. Karin mentioned that she'll be able to play with all the appliques thats on the train, so it should be ok when its all done.

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
I just looked at your dress again (beautiful) but this time I clicked on the pic and saw the back which is REALLY beautiful!! I think mine may be as long or maybe a little shorter than yours. I hope it's not too big on my butt!!! WHen they put it up it seemed OK. Mine is chiffon material so it's not too heavy. I've heard of Karin on this site and heard she does great work. I thought about going to her but I don't know if it's worth it being I don't need too much done. What do you think?

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
I've decided to have my dress made, but went to a few salons to try on the style I want. All the dresses I tried on were supposedly my size, but I had a squeeze into them!!!!! I think they do that to drive us all crazy

Re: Davids Bridal Sizing
Betty, thanks.
I think chiffon will be flatter when bustled than the polyester stuff that my dress is made off. As to whom you want to do alterations with, I don't know if I can help you. I think there are a few stores on LI that have done decent alteration and the girls were happy (try searching for david's bridal if you haven't done so yet). I live in Brooklyn, and the 'head seamstress' at the David's there didn't know to how to make a detachable train and still have the dress look decent. So I took the picture of the dress to Karin prior to ordering it, just to see if its possible to alter it the way I wanted it to. She said that it is, so there. I got Karin's name from someone on this sight, and since I didn't know any other seamstresses, I chose to have her alter my dress.
You may want to get a price quote at each place, if you have some free time. I know that David's would have cost me over 300 to have the bustles needed, which in the end came to be comparable in price to Karin, except she is doing the work that I want to be done. I think you can email Karin, and David has their alterations prices posted in the fitting rooms - I know the hem is 60 and up, but the rest I don't remember.
