We just found out our new sofa will be delivered next Saturday instead of the end of June! So we need to get the family room in shape fast.
The dilema - the room is a converted garage with dark paneling from very low quality wood - sort of a barnwood look, with LOTS of knot holes, open areas where knot holes fell out, etc.
The room is too dark, and we're trying to decide if we should paint over the paneling or if it will just accentuate the flaws more.
Leaning towards painting - we want a casual summer cottage or beach house look for the room. One wall has a partial brick finish - the back of the fireplace.
Here's a shot of the wall - what do you all think - is painting it a creamy white the perfect solution or the biggest mistake we could make?
Here's a shot of the wall, with a shot of the sofa fabric to follow. It looks a bit better in the photo, it's pretty rough and rustic.
Based upon what I've seen on HGTV and Trading Spaces, I think you can paint almost anything. The key will be to prep the surface well. Do you have a local paint store that you trust? Perhaps you can ask them for guidance.

Re: Decorating Advice Needed - Fast!
I think a white is a great idea. It would give the room a beachy feel. It would have almost a beadboard look. Put a series os pictures on the wall above the sofa to brea-up the vericality of the wall. I don't think it would look good in a 'color'. Definitly go neutral.

You could do a color, like a blue but this also depends on the rest on the space, and how much light comes in.

My parents had dark, knotty paneling in their den. When they redecorated they painted that paneling white and it looked great! I say go for it!!

I think it would look great painted creamy white. It would definately give you the cottagey feel. I love the sofa pattern! Your room will look cute! I want to see after pics!
Good luck!
PS- my DH and I painted over paneling in our office, same type of paneling as yours and it looks great! We painted it a very pale blue with a darker blue trim for the moulding. It gave the room a very beachy/nautical cottage feel. Exactly what I hoped for.

Noreen, the sofa is Hickory Hill (Norwalk Furniture), and the fabric is part of their collection. I got the sofa at Bare Boards in Bohemia, but I've seen the HH collection at several other places. Bare Boards has a sister store - I think it's on 25A up near Lake Grove or Nesconset. I've also seen this collection at Stanley's Furniture in Patchogue and at Seaman's Furniture.
In Bohemia or Holbrook there is a huge fabric place that makes sofas, chairs, and also reupholstery - you could spend days there looking at the fabric (and getting sick over some of the prices - $90 a yard for a gorgeous silk embroidered fabric - though that's the extreme end - they claim to be discounters) I'll try to find one of their ads and post their name and address.

Karen, I think painting the paneling white but using an antiquing effect would be ideal for a summer cottage type of look.
I LOVE the fabrics you chose for your sofa...it's very light and airy looking...aaaahhhh, summer!

Re: Decorating Advice Needed - Fast!
Noreen, it's an unstructured cushion with large, loose back pillows and big rolled arms. We got a corner sectional because it will have room for both of us to sprawl out to watch TV, or work for when the family is visiting and we need room to sit. I'll post a picture after we get in in next weekend.
We've decided we'll go for the white - at least the weather is crummy and so we won't feel so bad about all the time spent inside - off to Home Depot after lunch!

Re: Decorating Advice Needed - Fast!
I vote for painting! My mom did this years ago...and it still looks good...
Whats the big deal if you mess up anyway...you say the holes are falling out and its not the best wood...so you could only improve it!!
Have fun!

Re: Decorating Advice Needed - We're going for the paint!
We've decided to go for the paint - spent all day yesterday prepping the room and will be painting today, and the next few days after work Thanks for the encouragement to slop paint all over the wood - stay tuned for pictures in a week or so!
Noreen - the fabric place I mentioned is CSL Custom Upholsterers in Bohema. 631-563-6565 CLS Custom Upholsterers
They do window treatments, bedspreads, etc, as well as slipcovers and full reupholstery. They are having a 50% off sale right now.
