we had a coworker die and another coworker was using fb to get sympathy about it. I've known the guy 15 years. shes been here 2. Did I post on my status to get attention? No, I did not.

ITA i have a friend who passed almost 2 years ago now, and his fiancee still posts things from his page. It is very disturbing to see status updates from a dead person.

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend.
I completely agree with you and think that the whole fb thing gets out of hand. I don't even have fb, although I'm considering joining, but it's situations like this that make me not want to make an account. Some people are extremely inconsiderate and none of that information belongs on fb.
Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry you're feeling this way. Try to take a step back and appreciate that everyone grieves in their own way, and in this new world of technology entering every part of your life, some people may be using it as a way to reach out.
I have personal experience with this - my best friend committed suicide in June. Since she wasn't the most social, I wrote a facebook note saying that she had passed away (at the time we didn't know for sure it was suicide, we found out like 8 months later when test results came back) and that I thought it would be nice for her family if her high school friends and classmates came to the services to show their support. There is virtually no way a LOT of those people would have known about it otherwise, and sooo many people showed up, it really did mean a lot to her parents. HOWEVER - I get that for the most part what you're complaining about is not this same thing. What bothers me most is when people that barely knew the person, or weren't really friends, feign sympathy and act like they're all hurt, via facebook, for nothing more than attention, meanwhile where were they when this person was hurting? But if it's a really close friend and it's always on the person's mind I can see someone mentioning it. Lots of people who never gave my friend a second thought had wahh wahh status updates and then never even showed up to the wake. That made me really angry when I saw it happen on facebook too but I just thought to myself, she would get the biggest kick out of those people doing that and they are just being the same losers they were in high school.
I hope you don't think I'm criticizing you in ANY way - and suicide is just awful, awful, awful... and you don't know what it feels like til you've lost someone to it, so if you want/need to talk at all, please feel free to FM me. I found a way to deal with it and so will you and the people who were close to your friend. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Reading it again I would be just as angry as you are at the people who are advertising the fact that he killed himself... to this day I have never shared with anyone but our mutual close friends about what happened with my friend, and I would be really mad to see people just writing stuff like that without any sensitivity to your friend's family and close friends. Try to just not think about it and dismiss them as childish attention-wh0res.

FB is the last place to be 'advertising' something like that. Birthdays, weddings, get together's are ok, but something like a death in the family should NEVER be put on FB, especially if the family did not want the information to get out. They're out for the attention and thats not right...
Don't let FB ruin anything. just remember the fun times...

I get what you are saying. But I was honestly VERY upset when my Uncles wife deleted his facebook after he died. I wasn't ready to have it taken. I wanted to be able to look back on the things he wrote when he was alive and all the moments he was excited about throughout his fight. People weren't posting RIP on his page but it was just nice to have him to see his writing b.c I will never see him write anything ever again.
