If I was in your spot, I wouldn't write the letter.

WILL HE KNOW IF YOU WROTE A LETTER?

HOW WILL IT AFFECT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM IF YOU DIDNT?

HOW WILL WRITING OR NOT WRITING IT AFFECT YOU ?

In the past, I have been asked to write a letter for five professors. For three of these professors, I wrote glowing letters. The other two were OK professors (nothing great), and I just couldn't write a letter one way or another. I felt best not writing a letter at all (1 was offered tenure, and 1 was not)

Beth, I remember once before you saying how you felt about him. In my opinion, it's better to be honest than to lie and write a great letter that you don't really belive in. I understand you not wanting to actively screw him, so I would opt for not writing anything at all.

Good luck with your choice!!

Can you write a letter, but have it not be glowing? Not a horrible letter, but just the facts....I've done that before. I feel like this would let the committee know your feelings more than just declining to write a letter. Something like 'In the time I've known Dr. X he has had 6 journal articles published and I have worked with him on 3 research projects. Dr. X was always diligent about the cleanliness of the labs.'

I agree I would write the letter but not make it glowing one

Actually, that's what I'm trying to do right now. I've decided to write one.

I think this is a good idea...also try to pick maybe one or two things the professor does that is positive and work with that. Don't lie or make anything up, just wok with the facts!

I was in almost the exact same situation (except that I had already graduated, so his control over my future had expired) and chose NOT to write a letter on my advisor's behalf. I didn't feel that he deserved tenure. It was an optional letter, after all, so I exercised my option not to write one!
