Sorry if this is long- I booked my Makeup artist about a year ago and really like her. We had a second trial and although I liked my makeup both times, it really didn't wow me. But I hate the way I look in makeup so I thought it was that. Fast forward to two weeks ago- After my second trial, my sister's roommate who is invited the wedding, saw the trial pics and said, I can't believe you are hiring someone to do your makeup. I thought I WAS DOING IT! It was going to be part of my shower gift to you. She is a trained makeup artist but my sister and I didn't even think about it. SO to appease her, I had her do a trial. It came out INCREDIBLE! I looked just like myself but better if that makes sense. I absolutely loved the way I looked, I didn't even want to take it off when I went to bed 8 hours later. Plus she will be at the wedding the whole time for touch-ups and stuff. Plus its a gift and I feel like I say no, she would be really hurt.
Now what do I do? I love the woman who I had booked, she is incredibly sweet and she did a good job. It was just that my sister's roomate did such an outstanding job on me. It just blew me away. How do I fire someone who is a sweetheart and who I really like? Do I call, email or what? I am really upset about this and don't know how to handle it. Help!

Re: Delicate issue- need help!
I would just tell her the situation. Explain to her that as a gift, a good friend of yours has volunteered to do your makeup free of charge. Let her keep the deposit and be done with it. No big deal!

Re: Delicate issue- need help!
is it possible for her to do bridesmaids and your mother
or give her name to someone else on the board that still needs someone- FM all the people the same day as you

Re: Delicate issue- need help!
I already refer her all the time since she is so inexpensive and sweet. I guess I just have the bite the bullet and tell her. I never had to 'fire' someone and I am scared. I know I am being a big baby.
Now do I call her? That would be the proper way right? Also she didn't ask for a deposit so I may just mail her a check for $25-30 to make myself feel better. OR am I being a nut?

I would just explain the scenerio. any reasonable person would have to agreee that if you can get something for free you should take it.

christine - i am the same way with stuff like this!
I would go with the honest, heartfelt explanation. If she is the sweetheart that she is, she will understand.
If you still feel bad. I don't see anything wrong with sending her some flowers with a heartfelt thank you for the time she put in with the trials.
Your referrals to her are huge, and I'm sure she is so appreciative of them, she really will not be hurt.
Good Luck!

Definitely tell her thr truth and explain your situation. I'd send her a little something ($$) as compensation for reserving your date.

I would contact her the way you've been contacting her. If you correspond through email I would email her that your really sorry but one of your good friends assumed she was doing your make up and was doing it as a gift to you. I'm sure this woman will understand. I would also say that you will certainly be recommending her services regardless.

My thoughts exactly. Just tell her your going with someone else.

Christine,
Yes, tell her the story. I'm sure there are some last minute brides or problems that other brides might have and she can rebook the date.
Why not post it to see if any other girls need makeup that day?

Re: Delicate issue- need help!
Honestly, you have no obligation to tell the vendor that you booked any reason why you are cancelling. Business is business. You got a better offer, and I wouldn't think twice about it. It happens. I would just cancel and call it a day.

Re: Delicate issue- need help!
I wouldn't stress over it to much. Im sure you feel bad/guilty which is understandable...but there is still plenty of time for her to rebook the date. Explain you wound up receiving a Makeup Artist as a gift and you can't turn it down. Done Deal

Re: Delicate issue- need help!
It's done! I don't know why this bothered me so much except that she is just wonderful and I didn't want her to think I made all this up to fire her. I did get a bride who is getting married on my date send me an FM with her info so perhaps she will re-book soon.
