I am currently 7 days late with no signs of labor, and last week the baby's weight was estimated at 9lbs 9 ozs. My next appointment is on Monday, were we will discuss what is the next step, baby will probably be around 10lbs. I wanted a v-birth but I am terified about tearing/episiotomy with such a big baby and dont know if I should just go with a c-section. I guess my question is for those who had a v-birth with a large baby, how bad was it? would you do it again or go for a c-section? Thanks..

Re: Delivering a large baby ?
My son was a little smaller than 10lbs - he was 9 lbs 5oz - I was in labor for a long time with him and the only problem he had was a fractured clavicle, which the Dr's told me was quite common with bigger babies - it healed within a week or two, but you never noticed it because babies at that early in life are all cartilidge and not hard bones yet. I didn't have to have a epi, I did tear a little and had 2 stitches, but I didn't even know until the Dr told me. I am definately going for a vbirth with this baby too, and the Dr's are thinking it will be just as big as my son was - I'm not worried about it though.

Re: Delivering a large baby ?
I think most women know that I would say that I personally would never opt for a c/s if given the chance for a v-birth...you have to have faith that your body can birth your child safetly. A big baby is not IMO reason to automatically opt for a surgerical birth..there are so many women who have given birth to 10lb+ babies and in other parts of the world they do it without any pain medications...so trust in yourself and your body and your baby!!! Also, remember your EDD is just an estimate...many women do not go into labor for nearly 2 weeks past that date...you can do something naturally to help bring labor on. Also, there is something you can do to help prevent an tear or cut... Learn How Also, the sonogram estimates can be off! Your baby might not be as big as your think

Re: Delivering a large baby ?
Although I have never personally exprienced it, my SIL gave birth to my 9 lb 10 oz neice naturally. And she had no problems. In fact she was up and waliking aroudn that night like nothing happened! I think it all depends on the person because 4 months prior my other SIL had a 7 lb baby had had alot of tearing etc. As hard as it is, try not to over think it and worry too much!
Good LUCK!

Re: Delivering a large baby ?
Andrew was born at 9lbs. 7 oz (and 3 weeks early!) but he was a c/s because he was breech. Had he not been, both my doc and I were ready to deliver him vaginally. The doc said he delivered many babies over 10 lbs vaginally with no problems.

Re: Delivering a large baby ?
My son was 9 3 and I had him vaginally. My SIL had a 9 13 baby, my best friend had a 9 9 baby and another friend had a 9 4 baby - all vaginally. I have had a vaginal delivery (with episiotomy) and Ive had a c-section (baby #2 wqas breech) and I'd take an episiotomy over a c-section. Trust me on this one, there's alot more to a csection to be unhappy about than tearing or an episitomy. Unless your OB thinks that medically there is a reason for a c-section, I'd say try for the v-birth. But I realize you are overdue, stressed over the excitement/fear of birth and probably just want this baby out and in your arms. It's a tough time to have to make such a big decision.
What does your OB say? Is it a decision you were asked to make?

Re: Delivering a large baby ?
I was just lurking on this board, but I had to respond to this. My mother is 5'2' and was 100lbs soaking wet when she got married and had kids. All of my brothers and sisters were big babies (there's 8 of us) and she was a tiny little woman! Two of my sibling were in the 8 lb range, 4 (including me) were in the 9 lb range, one brother was 10lbs 6oz and the last was 11lbs 4oz. She delivered us all vaginally and with very little problems. Everyone's body is different, and your doctor would know best, but don't automatically assume you have to have a c-section because the baby is big. Your body will know and your doctor won't put you in danger.

Re: Delivering a large baby ?
I had a V-birth with my daughter. She was 9lbs. 1 oz. I was two days late with her. I was soooo scared about tearing. I had heard horror stories. Well, the nurse during labor was wonderful. She kept lubricating me throughout my pushing ( one hour and forty min.). Anyway, I tore a little bit and had a few stiches. I was fine. I wasn't uncomfortable at all. I healed very quickly. My only issue now is my bladder. It isn't even a big deal. I just have to be careful when I lift something or sneeze!! I am doing kegels and everything is slowly getting better. I understand your fear, but like others have said, trust your body. It is amazing what it can do. Hang in there! Oh, I had my daughter in August.
