Delivery room

Delivery room

I am due in about four weeks. Of course my dh will be in the delivery room with me, but I'm not sure if I should ask my mom and my mother in law to be in the room also. How many of you think that the birth of a child should be a private moment between husband and wife? How many of you are or already have had someone else there in the room when your child is/was born?

My husband will be the only non-medical professional allowed in the room. Having an audience would make it more stressful for me!

Re: Delivery room

I personally would NOT want my MIL in the delivery room. I guess if I felt I needed the support I would ask my mom or stepmother, but knowing me I would rather NOT have anyone in the room but DH and a doctor/nurse.
Some hospitals have rules about how many people may be in your room so you might want to speak with your doctor first.

Re: Delivery room

my mom would stress me out too much that she is not allowed anywhere near me when I go into labor ! DH is the one and only person allowed to be with me and if he can't- I'll take a friend before my mom.

Don't want to sound mean about her, I LOVE her but in stressful situations I have a VERY short fuse with her. It wouldn't be such a nice enviroment to bring a baby into

No way, no how was anyone but DH going to be in the room with me. Personally, I find it very odd when people have an audience so to speak watching their baby being delivered. Just not my cup of tea.

My mother and dh were in the delievery room with me. In retrospect I am so glad my mother was there she was a tremendous help. At one point my husband had to sit down because he was feeling light headed but my mom was able to take over where he left off.

Re: Delivery room

I had a c/s and the hospital rules are only husbands are allowed in the operating room. If I had a normal delivery, I could have DH and another person, but I would not have wanted anyone else there. Maybe a doula, but not my mom or his or a friend, etc.

I had a C/S so only Dh was allowed but I wouldn't want anyone else anyway. Only the necessary medical professionals.

My DH was in the delivery room and so was my mom. I wasn't planning on having my mom there. She was going to leave during active labor, but I am glad she didn't. She was so much support for me and my dh. She was such a help. I originally wanted it to just be me and my dh. I thought my mom might 'get in the way'. But, she was wonderful. I don't have any regrets.

Re: Delivery room

I had my Mom in the room when I had my son. But it wasnt so much for support for me as much as it was for her to experience it. I am her only daughter and she certainly will never have to chance to ever experience it otherwise. At my shower she was kidding (sort of) about her holding one leg and my DH holding the other while I pushed. Sometime after that I sat her down and gently explained that she would be there as an observer. If I thought she was going to get in there and try to help, I wouldnt have wanted it. BUT...it depends on what you want. And your DH too...I guess I would say the first conversation is with your DH to decide how you/both of you feel about it and second, to be sure that whoever you invite in, be it you Mother or MIL, that they know their role. It will help alot and avoid an in-labor psycho Mommy-to-be melt down.

Good luck

I agree 100%. I don't want anyone but DH in the room with me. Luckily, for me I don't have to hurt my mom's or MILs feelings by not asking since we leave in Ireland and no one will be here. I also don't want DH peeking down there. He will be up at my shoulders the whole time. I want all his thoughts of that area to stay the same (sorry if TMI).

Re: Delivery room

My doctor recommends not having anyone besides DH. He said he's seen too many times where it stresses the new mommy out b/c she is not totally focused on the job, but wants to make sure her mom/MIL, etc are comfortable and involved. He told me 'They had their chance, now it's yours.'

I kicked my Mom out of the delivery room with my 1st born, she was doing TOO much and driving me nuts. I wnted my SIL to be there for my 2nd born becasue she has a real calming factor. My next will only be me and my DH since my Mom wil be taking care of my kids and my SIL has her own little peanut now.

My mom and my (ex)husband was with me for my son and I plan on having my DH, my Mom, my MIL and my sister in the room this time - it is such an amazing thing that we want them there... it's all personal preference.

My mom, my sister, and DH were all the in the room with me. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. They all took turns during my VERY long labor sitting with me while the others napped. During delivery, DH held my head up, my mom held my hand, and my sister snapped the photos. It was wonderful!

Re: Delivery room

Of course, DH was in the room. My mother was also in the room for 2 reasons (1) she is a retired OB nurse so she could legitimately help and (2) my DH wanted her because if he couldn't handle it, he wanted her there. Additionally, since I delivered in the hospital where my mother worked for 30 years, my MIL, FIL and SIL were allowed to be right outside the door (they could hear everything but saw nothing). Personally, I am so glad they were all there. My mother was able to see my son enter the world, DH's parents heard his first scream and my son got to meet all his grandparents within minutes of his birth. I know it is not for everyone. For me, being able to share the experience with my loved ones made the experience even better.

I had both my dh and my mother. She said she wanted to be part of it and in a way i think it made us closer. the only bad thing is that at the moment my daughter was born, my mother started bawling and my husband said he felt like she stole his thunder.
Oh well It was a beautiful experience for all of us.

I had just my DH in with me. I wanted my mom there but the hospital would not allow it. Besides I don't think she could of handled it anyway! It was perfect with just me and my husband and wouldn't change it!
