I have a question for those of you that have already put down the deposit on your wedding gown. When I went to a store last week (that will remain nameless for right now) I was told originally that I would put down half the cost of the dress for a deposit so it can be ordered. Sounded right to me. However when I went back no longer was a putting down the deposit on the cost of the dress from the store, but on the retail value of the dress. It seemed that all of these hidden costs started popping up from nowhere. Now,...call me crazy, but if a dress costs 900$ in a store, shouldn't that be what you are putting the deposit down on? Suddenly I was putting down the deposit on a 1200$ dress. Was I being ripped off? Needless to say I did NOT put the deposit down because this story didn't sound right to me. Anyone hacve any insight?
Thanks!

Re: Deposit on Dress
I'm confused - what are you paying for the dress ? Is it 900 or 1200 ?
I put down half of the purchase price of my dress, which included the sales tax, but not the cost of the bustle or the alterations.

Re: Deposit on Dress
i guess the same thing happened to me. the dress was a certain cost on the tag and then after taxes and all that jazz, i had to put down a deposit based on the new number. my store actually allowed me to give her the 50% up until she actually puts in the order of the dress though (sept or oct), so i have until then to give my 50%.

Re: Deposit on Dress
Hmm, that sounds a bit shady to me, but maybe that's how some stores operate???
My dress cost $$ and we talked them down some. In the end they gave us a price for my dress and another price for the dress with all alterations included (which was $200 more) so we decided to buy it with the alterations included.
They required 50% of THAT price to be paid then in order to order the dress. The day the dress came in to the store a month ago, they charged the remaining balance on my mom's card that she has paid the initial deposit with.
I don't know why you'd pay 1/2 of $1200 when the cost of the dress is $900!!!

Re: Deposit on Dress
Right...that's what didn't make sense to me. The dress is actually 980$ in the store. Then next she tells me that I have to pay an extra 100$ for the hallow to hem cut, but now they are making me put a deposit down the retail cost of the dress....not the cost of the dress from the store. This had nothing to do with tax or anything...it was like the price of the dress drastically changed all of a sudden. So, on a dress that I was going to put down 500$ on, I am now required to put down 760$. It just didn't seem right to me.

Re: Deposit on Dress
I had to put down 60% of the price I paid. That's it.

Well, if the dress is $980 plus $100 for the hollow to hem, the total is $1080. Your 50% deposit should be $540. NO IDEA why they would want you to pay $760 unless they require 70% deposit (which would be $756). But then they would have to NOTE on the contract that you're paying 70% now and that only 30% will be due when the dress comes in, which would be $324.

Re: Deposit on Dress
Still doesn't sound right. Sounds like they are making extra charges, or perhaps asking you to pay upfront for alterations.
Can you find the dress at another store ? IMO, I would look somewhere else. Go with your gut feeling. Just make sure that wherever you go, there is a cap on the alteration price.

Re: Deposit on Dress
I think I know where you are talking about. My dress was $1200 retail, I'm paying $1100. My deposit was 1/2 of the retail ($600). But now when I pick up my dress next week, I only have to give them $500. There are no xtra fees.

Re: Deposit on Dress
Sounds right to me. I had to put down 60%, but it wasn't on the price tag it was after all the other things were calculated in there, tax, i also made changes. There is also an alteration cap. So after all that was calculated then i was given the total of what the 60% deposit would be.
I mean regardless you either pay it now or the tax and everything you would still have to pay later you know what i mean...so even if they charged the price for the dress without tax, alterations or anything then that wouldn't make sense bc well we need to pay the tax hahahaha. And i thought they would leave the taxes for when the dress is ready.
On my receipt though they listed everything i was getting charged for and the amount next to it.

Re: Deposit on Dress
Thanks ladies for your thoughts. What I didn't like was that they were being sneaky about the extra charges. Nothing was mentioned like this to me when I originally asked about the dress and suddenly when I sat down to do all this, all these additional costs were added on. I've called some other bridal shops this morning, and asked them specific questions. You are putting the deposit down on the cost of the dress, which is the way it should be. You see, on the contract is says the cost of the Retail of the dress, not the cost of the store....which leaves me with a balance of the retail of the dress. Most likely in the end it would all even out, but what if it didnt? Like I said, it seemed as if they were sneaking things in on me....besides the fact that they have a really bad atittude. It seemed to me, that I could order the dress from elsewhere and did not have to put up with rudeness and snottyness. You all have helped me very much, thank you so much!!

yeah they should point out all the extra charges, but alot of places will bring up all the extra charges after you decide to purchase not ahead of time.
plus if youre not comfortable with them and how they treat you def go elsewhere

Re: Deposit on Dress
Forget the extra charges... if the CONTRACT says the price of the dress is the retail price and you are paying 50% of that, you will owe them the other 50% of the RETAIL cost when you pick it up! Your contract should state the price that you will actually be paying, showing how much your deposit is and how much your balance is...
Sorry, but if they are only writing in the contract the retail cost, you WILL owe them the balance based on the retail (i.e. higher) cost of the dress.
Get the name of the designer and the style number and size and order that baby elsewhere. You also mentioned they had a bad attitude - it that's BEFORE they get your money, trust me, it won't get any better after you pay them ... they'll have NO incentive to be any nicer b/c you already paid and owe a balance per your contract.
I've heard Phyllis of Bridal Elegance can get dresses for a great price. Call or email her for a quote. Good luck!

Re: Deposit on Dress
My mom left half for my dress plus the cost of extra material to add the straps to the dress. Your experience does sound a bit off

yeah they definitely need to write it all out...how much you are paying now, what you will owe and why, they should break it down in the contract. I wouldn't want to do business with someone who wouldn't do this, you shouldn't even have to ask for this

Re: Deposit on Dress
They broke down every price on the contract but we paid 50% for the dress, balero jacket and tax. We had a written amount of the cap and estimate bussle on the side.
