Design your own bridesmaid dresses???

I have been having such a hard time finding bridesmaid dresses thay will accomodate the shapes of all six girls in my bridal party. Has anyone heard of going to a seamstress to have them help you design a dress and then make it? I know exactly what I want and think this could be a cute and unique idea. But I don't know how costly this can get or who do go to? Any advice or recommendations?

I had to get a gown made for a religious wedding I was in. It cost us each $400. I don't know if I would have shelled out that much if she wasn't my MOH.

What about picking a designer, fabric and color and letting each girl pick a different style? It would be much cheaper and then each girl could pick the most flattering look for them.

I have a feeling that would be costly.. but I don't know.

I had a hard time finding dresses that would fit all 6 of my girls 2 and my girls ar size0, 2, 10, 12, 16 and 28.

BUT I FINALLY FOUND SOMETHING after like 6 outings with MOH. OH, and I wound up getting it for $140.
What are you looking for? Maybe I could tell you good brands to look at?

Originally I wanted to pick one designer, color and fabric and have the girls pick their own style.... But now I'm finding that I just don't like enough of the dresses to pick that many for them to choose from. I want a knee length dress in a bright fuscia color that really pops. I thought Chiffon would be flattering on any of the girls but what I'm finding now is that the chiffon dulls the color that I really want. I'm so torn because I feel like if I had someone making the dresses than each girl could tailor it to how they feel comfortable. Not looking to have them spend any more than $200 though.

I had the same issue! I was going to do the same thing, but I couldn't find enough dresses that I liked so I wound up going with one.

I looked at some chiffon dresses because I really didn't want satin. I found the same isue with color in the chiffon, plus it was very clingy. We wound up going with taffetta and I love it. it's more structure, more forgiving, and you still get the vibrant color.

I found venus bridal had a beautiful chiffon dress over a satin overlay though and the color was beaitful. Vollage bridal had it and it was more affordable than a lot of other dresses I looked at. You can customize the under and over color to be different or make it all one color and I'm pretttys ure they had a nice fuscia you would like.

I wound up ordering a jasmine bridal dress at Macy's.
Did you try DAvid's though? One main reason ID idn't go there was because they didn't have the exact color I was ooking for... but for short dresses they have a really nice selection

Re: Design your own bridesmaid dresses???

I have a large bridal party (11 girls!) and had the same problem. I wanted to keep costs down and still find something that would flatter a broad range of sizes. I also contemplated picking a designer, color and fabric and then letting the girls choose. My biggest issue seemed to be finding my actual color (pewter) at the right price. I can't believe how pricey some of these dresses are! But I wound up going to Alexandria Boutique in Forest Hills and got a Jim Hjelm gown for 40 bucks cheaper than Bridal Reflections had given me! Also, as for material, I also thought that chiffon would flatter all body types...until i had a couple girls put it on. It shows everything! I wound up going with taffeta because it is still lightweight and easy to move in and it is much more flattering! Good Luck!!

Re: Design your own bridesmaid dresses???

I'm not sure about the costs of custom-made gowns, but I am sure it is much more than an off-the-rack style. But, I do have a suggestion: certain styles are more universally flattering than other styles. Look for dresses with an empire waist and A-line skirt. This tends to highlight everyone's smallest part and be forgiving around the tummy. Also consider a v-neck, which will draw attention up to the face, and allow for straps for girls who may 'need' the support of a bra. Also, pleats around the waist tend to create volume and are not great for bigger girls.

Something like thisor this may flatter everyone, if you can find a similar style that you like in your color. Good luck! :)

We are going with THIS in Watermelon. The organza overlay doesnt really mute the BRIGHT fuschia color, in my opinion. And, they are $139!
