Re: destination wedding-etiquette gift

I'm thinking about having a destination wedding so I'll answer from the perspective of the couple hosting.

A destination can be less expensive or the same cost of an at home wedding depending on what the couple is paying for. If they are paying for a welcome dinner, the wedding, a brunch, and possibly activites for the guest, it is most likely the same cost.

With that said, if I do choose the route of destination wedding, I completely understand that the guests are spending a lot to be with us. I expect people to either give up less money/less expensive gifts or to give us nothing at all.

My opinion might be different than your friends though...if we do a destination wedding, we would be doing so to have a very small intimate wedding (35 people) and to share our wedding with only our very close family and our wedding party. These are the people who mean the most to us, and we would be inviting them to share our wedding with them, not to get gifts out of them..

HTH..actually, may have made you more confused

i think the couple would understand if you gave a little less than you normally would, or at least i hope they would. It can get expensive, i went to a wedding in florida and had to pay for hotel for more than 1 night, plus airfare for both of us, and just being there you spend money.

I think you could give less but still give something. Even non destination weddings are destination weddings for some folks so I guess it would be the same as out of twon guests paying less for gifts. . dunno

From my understanding i thought you wouldn't have to give a gift?

We're having a destination wedding-and it is costing about the same as a wedding here. With that said...since people are traveling for us, no we don't expect the same gifts as we would having a wedding at home. However, I know my friends and family and I think they are still going to be generous....this wedding was a LONG time in the waiting! lol.

I think its like any other wedding- you give what you can afford- for a destination wedding- your presence is the present and you are paying a lot to be there.

We went to one in vegas last year and it cost us over $1500 to attend- so we gave less than we usually do- which was all we could afford at the time- I am sure that the B&G understood- and they have made a point of saying to us often how touched they are that we came.
