Destination Wedding - Puerto Rico

Original post by CS020604

My FI and I are going next week to Dorado, Puerto Rico, in hopes of booking a destination wedding at the Hyatt Dorado Beach and Country Club. Has anyone ever been there? We're very excited -- we love the photos and the information listed on the website, and it looks beautiful. We have an appointment to get a two hour tour of the hotel with a wedding coordinator so we can see all guest rooms, restaurants, activities, etc. We've worked with a great travel agent from this site (FM if interested) and hopefully everything will go very smoothly.

Does anyone have any advice for us before we head down to PR and hopefully book a date for our wedding?!?!

TIA :)

Don't get scared! I have never experienced it...but know that it's a problem...but really, no worries!

The thing about driving at night is not the area, but rather carjackings. And they do that anywhere. There's actually a law that past midnight, provided there are no cars coming, you don't have to stop at red lights. It's that bad.

But that's because it's a small island and our youth is lost and has nothing better to do. The 'barrios' or ghettos are like in every place...scary!

Yes, Fodors is great...

I also recommend going to Boqueron Beach and Luquillo and eating from the vendors on the beach...yum!

Okay, excuse my stupidity here, but what's the 'beaten path'???? :) You suggested going off the beaten path to eat....???

Thanks so much for the reminder to bring change -- I would have never have thought to do that!!

You mentioned that the EC is more visually appealling -- is the Hyatt not?? :( I'm obviously a little paranoid ..

Carjacking - red light rule...she mentioned this earlier, basically if it's late at night (after 9 or 10pm) and you're at a red light and no one is in the way, you can run the red light.

Sometimes the car jackers like to do it while someone is stopped at a red light, thus the rule.

However, I would not worry too much about this. As long as you have typical street smarts, you'll be fine!!!

Off the beaten path = not the typical tourist traps or places

I go off the beaten path all the time when I travel. I go to places where the locals hang out. It's like going to Miami and NOT staying in South Beach. That would be off the beaten path.

I don't want to scare you!

OK...off the beaten path meaning not super touristy places like Charlie's, etc. But local restaurants...with typical food, seafood, Caribbean fare, etc. Puerto Rico is beautiful, even more so when not going the tourist route, IMO.

The Hyatt is beautiful and it's beachfront and on a great part of the island (well, I'm biased! )...they're both different in their 'charm'...and the Hyatt has not only a gorgeous beach but golf and a casino!

Thank you for clearly being able to express yourself better than me!

You ladies have been sooooo helpful! We'll be sure to follow the 'red light rule' and eat 'off the beaten path!!'. I checked out the Fodor's website, and it was very informative. It really is amazing how people either LOVE the hyatt (and dorado) or have horrible things to say about it. The pictures on the website look beautiful (i.e., rooms) and some people are saying that the rooms are horrible!!

Guess I'll find out in a week for myself!!

Thanks again -- you've been a great resource :)

I'm here...should you need more info. We'll talk in about 2 weeks, I have no doubt you'll love it.

Know that a lot of people go to the Hyatt to golf...and well, they're 'uptight and stuffy'...it's not a Ritz Carlton (neither is the Wyndham) and people can't seem to differentiate when reviewing. But it's a lovely property and the pictures of the room (and the terrace overlooking the water) look beautiful.

Have fun!
