Re: Destination Wedding Question?????

I think that the conventional wisdom on destination weddings is:

The more your guests spend to get there, the less money they should invest in a gift.

However, if you wish to give gift I am sure they couple will appreciate it. Just send it to them before the wedding, so they don't have to carry it home.

I would still give a gift, but it depends on the couple as to how much I'd give. If they were family, I'd give the same as I would for a local wedding - if it were a friend, probably less.

Our friends were married in Jamaica two years ago. We didn't give them anything for Jamaica, but we did give a gift when they had a small reception in NY. To be honest, they're two of our closest friends, but we thought the whole thing was a bit much to ask.

why would you not give a gift? because of the expense involved in going away? IMO, that's gravy for you since you can have a vacation out of it too.

I would definitely give a gift. if it's from both you and your FH, I wouldn't give less than $200. IMO

I don't see a group vacation that someone else has chosen for me as 'gravy.' I really don't mean to sound cheap or anything, but we gave an engagement gift, shower gift, and spent over $3000 on the trip, I think it would have been outrageous for them to have expected a gift as well. As they put it 'Your presence it present enough.'

I'm all for destination weddings, but I think you really need to be considerate of your guests and do your best to find a good deal.

I would give what you can. Its always nice and helpfull to receive gifts. Even if its just something small, i think it would be greatly appreciated by the bride and groom.

destination weddings are a lot to ask of people, i dont think many people having them would expect large gifts be it monetary or material from their guests.. BUT giving something even if small would be a nice gesture IMO

imo and from what i understand cause i was gonna do a destination wedding, they shouldn't expect a gift. the gift is you being there to witness the wedding espically if they are going someplace that cost $$$$ to get to.

i would do a small somthing when they get back but nothing large that you would do in a NY wedding.

I would definitely give a gift!! How could you not? I never heard that about destination weddings. Personally, I would give the same amount as if it was a regular wedding.

I would feel bad NOT giving them a gift but I'm not going to give what I would normally give for a wedding. I'd pick something off their registry and have it sent to them

Re: Destination Wedding Question?????

Depends....My funds are not unlimited. for me to spend a lot (Like NFerrandi) to go to a destination wedding, it would probably only be for my brother or sister, or Fh's brothers. So I'd go if it was a sibling, and give a small gift, b/c i cannot spend that kind of $$$. If anyone else asked me- even my best friends, I would decline the invitation and send the same gift as if they were having a reception.
