Is it weird to think a destination wedding is the best thing to do when stressed out? lol
Nothing is booked yet so no $$ would be lost.
I am just afraid that in the end i will regret not having something here where all my friends and family could attend.
financially it makes sense... to have a great time somewhere and go straight on a honeymoon and all the $ that would be saved could go towards a house.
But then there would always be that what if...

Re: destination wedding thoughts?
It's always an option. Depending on how close you are to your family....you might regret it.
My brother and his wife had a destination wedding. 25 people attending, of which only 8 were relatives. The rest were friends. They say the didn't end up saving as much as they thought because they flew 7 of the 8 relatives in. Lots of people couldn't make it because they just couldn't arrange for the time and expense.
After seeing their wedding, I realized I could never do that. I'm have a 'small' wedding (125- small by nyc standards) and the best part for me will be dancing around with my flowergirls (cousins) and having our relatives and friends there to share in our special event.
It's up to you what you envision for your day.

Re: destination wedding thoughts?
Its a much bigger expense for guests, which for me is the deciding factor against it... i want everyone in my family and friends to be present. Also, i want to get married in a church and im greek orthodox so i dont think that would be very viable in say Mexico lol. but it does cut down on the price per person since less will be able to attend... its completely up to what you and your FH want more....JMO

Sometimes I feel the same way..but in the end I think it would end up being just as stressful...It's all up to you and your FH...if you feel like you may regret it then you prob. will and should just have a wedding locally but who am I to say?? Just make sure you do what you want to do and have fun while doing it!!

That's what I wanted to do but FH wanted his whole family there so now we're having 225 guests.....you could always do destination then have a party when you get back home.

Re: destination wedding thoughts?
I liked the idea of a destination wedding, but my DH didn't. I wanted to get married in Disney World or even on a beach, but DH had to have the church wedding.
The only reason I decided agaisnt it was because of the expense for guests. We invited 330 people to our wedding. If we had a destination wedding, we would have ended up with 30-40 people and a small wedding wasn't in the cards for us.
DHs cousin (one of my BM's) is having her wedding in Cancun this April. I really wanted to go especially because she was in my wedding, but DH and I just can't afford it. Not no mention, he can't take the time off of work. The hotel and flight alone for DH and I would have been close to 2K. Plus food, a wedding gift and all that, it's just too much. I really want to go but I can't. That's exactly the reason DH and I decided not to go with it. I just feel like it was way to much to ask of my guests. With the way the economy is right now, (IMO) it would be way to much for guests. Plus, DH grandpa isn't even going to his own grand daughters wedding because he doesn't fly. In the long run, it would have saved us tons of $$ but I couldn't see not having my/his family there.
I guess it all depends on what you really want and if your family and freinds would really go. She is having another reception in New York after her HM for friends and family that couldn't attend. I guess that would have been okay for us, but the wedding is what really counts. I would say 75% of our families wouldn't have came if we did a destination wedding. If your family and freinds would go, I'd say go for it!

Re: destination wedding thoughts?
Advice from a bride who is doing a destination wedding in NYC... be firm with what you really want and remember who the day is supposed to be about - you and your FH. Its really tough when people you really hoped would be there, like parents, close friends and family, and aren't able to make it. And be prepared for people to pull out - like my FH's parents!
We have now changed our plans to include a full cocktail reception here in Australia, 3 days before we fly out. This way, everyone still feels like they are included and thought about and they can get involved. My FMIL is helping with invitations, menu plans, guest list etc. We will still have a cake and favors. Everything short of the actual ceremony and wearing the dress! FH is happier with this and everyone else seems ok. And the cocktail reception helps keep the costs down.
Plus now I get double the stress and double the satisfaction when it all works out (I hope!)
Again - the day is ultimately about yourselves. So do what will make you happy.

Re: destination wedding thoughts?
i love a destination wedding idea- i almost did one! however, considering how the economy is so bad, people might not be able to afford to travel, take time off work etc. i do know brides who have done this and only invited immediate family (moms, dads, sisters, bros) and loved it. also, if you are feeling very stressed out about it, if you want you can book a wedding in only 6weeks time... my best friend did this and got an amazing deal at captain bills in bay shore (only like $45 pp)... it was great and stress free for them!!!
