It took FH & I forever to decide on where we were going to have our wedding, then we went to a destination wedding and he loved it. For the most part (until recently) I was the one doing the wedding reserch & then we would review it together.
Since we went to the wedding , Jas has done so much research on getting married in the tropics,
I'm unclear, I don't want to mention anything to our family & friends b/c we've already changed our minds 100,000,000 times

Re: Destination weddings?
There's two distinct sides to this. I would love to go to a destination wedding, because it's a great excuse to get away and go on vacation. Unfortunately, I have a really hard time getting time off from work and I don't get vacation pay, so any days I take off to go away are days I don't get paid. It's really hard for me to take time off from work and it would be a tough choice for me. So really it depends on if the people who are most important to you to have at your wedding, if you think they'd go for it have a great time. If people you really wanted to have there wouldn't be able to go, then you might want to reconsider. Good luck!

Re: Destination weddings?
thanks, would you go, you have 18 months to plan for it?

Re: Destination weddings?
I'm probably in a different situation than your guests. I work in the entertainment industry and therefore change jobs every few months. I can't plan 18 months ahead because I have no idea where I'll be in 18 months. If I worked in a regular office job or was a teacher or something I would do my damndest to get the time off and go, for sure. I think giving people that much notice certainly ups your chances of having more guests make the trip.

Re: Destination weddings?
I love them and wanted one. It was to be 2/19/06 in Mexico at Royal Hideaway
We gave everyone 17 months notice (around the time when we started looking at engagement rings). Since a few members of FH's family biatched about it due to the costs and since one of my favorite uncle's does not fly, we decided against it I still have the discount airfare cards that American Airlines sent to us to include in the invitations

Re: Destination weddings?
I think that many of the family/friends would probably goif they had enough time to prepare for it and $700 pp is not all that bad for an all inclusive (incl. air???). could also be like a second (or first for some) honeymoon for your married couples. it would be rally nice, i wish we would have thought of that before the parents got invloved and started in with their plans and such...

Re: Destination weddings?
I think they are great if you give enough notice and if the place you are asking them to go to is somewhat reasonably priced! They could be a lot of fun. A lot of people don't go away and they need an excuse to do so.
An example of what not to do, we've only been invited to one destination wedding, it was Pres Day weekend with less than 6 months notice. The prices for airfare and lodging were ridiculous and the flight was pretty far. My FH was looking into it because he determined to go (without me because I had a family cruise already planned for that time). Needless to say he didn't end up going.
Everyone I know who's been to a destination wedding has loved it.
The one thing though, a couple of girls in my office have had them, and it's a little harder for you to plan because of the distance and the fact it's all on the phone!

Re: Destination weddings?
Hi felt I had to reply as I'm having a destination wedding...live in London (England) and wedding is in St Lucia, W.I. We gave our family and friends notice (sent STD cards) out last June..wedding is taking place on 22 July, this year.
We are really blessed all our family love the idea and are attending, as well as most of our friends not just from here, States, other parts of the Caribbean, S Africa etc. Most people are looking at it from the point of an extended holiday. We don't have the problems with holiday time as you guys do though, so that might be something to consider from your side.
You will need to get a wedding coordinator to do all the running around, legal bits etc. cost wise it will work out cheaper and MHO less stressful (planning stages).
Need to mention we are not going for the usual wedding destination package either.....FM me if you want more input. Good luck

Re: Destination weddings?
I would only go to a destination wedding for a very close family member like a sister, brother etc. Most people I spoke to about destination weddings did not want to many people invited only immediate family.

Re: Destination weddings?
I say you know your guests better then we do. If you are ok with having a small intimate wedding I say go for it. Know that some people just might not be able to come b/c of money issues. Make sure it is something you are really interested in, also if you know a lot of people who are doing this, and you would be inviting the same people it may become a burden. A guy I work with his daugher was at about 5 of them last year. I guess she likes them.

Re: Destination weddings?
I think it is important to remember that your wedding is about you and you FH, not about your guests. As long as the people you love the most will make it, who cares about the rest.
We are getting married in Italy and had concerns over whether certain family members could afford it, well everyone is making an effort to save $ and when the time comes if we need to help a close family member out we will. We are inviting 50 people and truthfully there are only 10 of those people that are near and dear that we have our hearts set on attending.
Don't let other people interfere with what you and your FH really desire.
I love the idea of a destination wedding and would go to one of a good friend or family in a heartbeat.

Re: Destination weddings?
I REALLY wanted a destination wedding and have alawys dreamed about getting married in the Carribean on the beach. When I started planning the wedding that, of course, was my first thought. My parents were fine with whatever I decided, but then it came down to FH side of the family. His parents are divorced and I don't know how his mother would have been with going. His grandmother, along with my MOH don't fly. And it just started to become this huge ordeal. And on top of it, couldn't do a destination wedding and then a honeymoon, so I'd have all these people on my honeymoon w/ me. SO anyway, we decided that having a wedding at home was the best idea. I think I will renew my vows on an island down the road. Good Luck!

Re: Destination weddings?
I like the idea but...
I think you will have less people there because of the expense. I also think you will not get as much in the way of gifts because people have to spend just to be there (not that's this is what a wedding is about, but just a thought).
We have a wedding in vegas in April. We've known about it for a year, but that doesn't make the expense any easier to bear.
I still think it will be soooo much fun.

Re: Destination weddings?
Also- for anyone that cannot attend the wedding, we will be having a party at home after so that everyone can celebrate with us.
Side note- we are requesting NO GIFTS
Just offering suggestions to address the many challenges people face when planning a destination wedding.

FH is in the middle of planning a 'vacation' for us to St. Thomas to research, I thought he was just planning fun in the sun, but, w/ the secheual he's put together, it's a Jr. Clark W. Grizwald
