A friend of mine is going to St. Thomas and is paying $1200 for his airfare and hotel accomodations. Do you still have to give a gift if you are already spending all this money?
I am not sure what the etiquettee is on destination weddings!
Thanks

Re: DESTINATION WEDDINGS
I have been researching this for a while now since I am having a DW...i think it all depends on how well you know the person....My friends I know will give me something and my close family also ...im not expecting much though

im not sure about etiquette for this but I know that I wouldn't come empty handed to a persons wedding whether it was 12 miles away or 1200 miles away. I would give something, it doesn't have to be much at all, but i definitely wouldn't show up empty handed but thats just me.

Re: DESTINATION WEDDINGS
I know that when I originally wanted to have a DW I was NOT expecting ANYONE who attended to bring gifts! The fact that they are traveling to be with you on your special day is gift enough. JMO.
That said, I think that some people would probably bring a gift anyway but probably something very small and not too expensive.
If he's paying $1200 to go, I don't think the bride and groom really expect a gift equal to what he would have given if the wedding was here.

That is what I was thinking as well but wasn't sure. Thanks so much!

Re: DESTINATION WEDDINGS
I had to do this a few months ago, well it wasn't a destination wedding for them actually but the wedding was in florida...FH and i still left money for them...I think everybody told us to leave less though bc we already spent money to go there and the hotel they had rooms blocked at were a bit expensive. I dont know what FH ended up doing, if he took some money out or not lol
