Destination Weddings?

Destination Weddings?

Do you think guests resent the travel? We'd like to have our wedding out east, maybe someplace like Shelter Island. And while everyone seems supportive, I think the BMs and the guests will be bitter about all the extra costs of accommodations.

My brother got marreid in Disney world, and everyone loved the idea. I made a week out of it, and others made a weekend out of it. Yes it was ore expensive, but i had so much fun, I incorporated my normal vacation for the year into the wedding.

The only negative thing is that, not as many epople will come, becaseus some will not be able to afford it. One of my brother's GM couldn't make up, but he is flakey.

Remember-- It's YOUR day. Don't go crazy thinking about what everyone else wants/needs/would like. You'll end up stressed and nuts.
Do what you and your FI want. If you want a destination wedding... Do it! It will be fab.

We are getting married out east and everyone seems genuinely excited about a long weekend. I made sure that the weekend I picked was right after 'high' season so the hotel rates wouldn't be too bad. Actually, I was surprised how many of my FMILs friends, from long island, have actually opted to stay over for the night so they don't have to drive home late and can relax and have brunch with us the next day.

The other thing you should consider is that you will probably have more 'no's' than if you did it close to where you live.

I also attended a wedding in Disney and it was awesome! The bride and groom got married at the Wedding Chapel and then the reception was at the Grand Floridian which was gorgeous! The cocktail hour was outside on the lagoon and then the reception was in the ballroom - it wasn't that expensive since the airfare to Florida is reasonable and the hotels and admissions were discounted for the guests! We had a blast and it forced us to take a much needed vacation!

I don't consider places like Shelter Island or the Hamptons destination weddings per se especially if you are from NY/LI. Out of town guests will have to stay in hotels anyway.

I am getting married in Montauk July 5th of this year - yes it is a lot for the guests but it is what me and my FH wanted. We didn't think a lot of people would stay out there but almost 80% of our guest list is making a long weekend out of it. I think it is also important to have other weekend activities planned for those who decided to stay. For example, we are having a barbecue on the beach the night before the wedding and a brunch the day after. Remember that this is you and your FH day - no one elses!!! You do what you want to do!!! Good Luck!

PS - I've heard good things about Rams Head on SHelter Island
