Usually the train hooks on to the dress. Some designers use velcro, but I've never seen a 'train' disaster. I've had a few friends use dresses like that. It's not noticeable at all.. I definitely want a dress with a detachable train.

I had a detachable cathedral length train that had a ton of working and it was held on with 10 hook and eyes. When it came off the worrking was identical on the back of the actual dress as it was on the train but let me tell you that i am so thankful i had one because it was sooooooooo much lighter!
I have no full pics of the back of my gown without the train (no pro pics yet) but there are some various angles of the back without the train in my album.

Edit: You cannot tell the train comes off at all!

If you look in my album, you'll see a pict of mine. When you take off the train, I'll still have that big bow on my butt (it's underneath, I think, where it attaches).

I am not a fan of the detachable train.
On some dresses it is done beautifully and you cant tell, others not so much and the back of the dress after its taken off is 'flat' looking. When you find one you like with a detachable just be sure to really look at it. If you like it then go for it.
