Details of a wedding... (tip)

Details of a wedding... (tip)

Hey brides!

My tip: don't go overboard with the personal touches to a wedding. I went crazy adding things here & there. I had two favors (CD & wine favors - that I did burned/decorated myself), ribbon wands with bells (which I spray painted & put together myself), table names (personalized & framed myself), framed 'guestbook', & a seat chart (did myself). Ultimately, not too many people even noticed the details.

In the end, it'll probably feel more like the details were for you to enjoy, but I wanted to pass off that tip. So bear in mind the time, effort & costs you put into your details, and the possibility that it will go unnoticed. I hope that my tip will be useful for you - and saved you $ & time.

Thanks for posting this tip actually ... planning the wedding for over a year now, I am constantly reminding myself that for other's people's weddings I didn't remember certain things that have made me freak - I think putting things into perspective and focusing on a few special details instead of going insane with a ton of little things can go a looooong way!

Hmmm thanks for letting us know!!! I really appreciate it! I have to stop driving myself insane.

At my wedding it was the opposite. All my guests noticed all the little details that I had from the seating card frames, to the menus and the kissing bells. Everyone made sure that they took one of each to save so that they would remember my wedding.

I'm sorry you felt that way, but I have to disagree.

I had a lot of little signature touches and just about everyone raved about them...but if they didn't, it wouldn't matter - I achieved the look I wanted regardless of whether anyone took the time out to compliment me on it or not.

I wouldn't discourage anyone from wanting to make their night unique or memorable...

Au contraer (sp?), I'm not trying to discourage anyone on making their wedding their own... just trying to be the voice of reason. If one can do without a minor detail, and if it'll save $, why not X it out?
I definitely could have done without the ribbon wands (I spent a week putting them together) because my guests didn't even use them, and still clinked on the glasses!

Besides, most of my guests weren't sitting around trying to notice details. They were all about dancing, drinking, and enjoying themselves. I would rather that than get compliments on details, anyday!

However, everyone has their own tastes & demands... they can either value the tip, or cast it aside. To each their own.

You're right, everyone has their own tastes and demands - I was offering the other side of the story, as did NYLisa.

I appreciated that my guests not only enjoyed their evening to the fullest but that they noticed the efforts I put into my day/night and took the time to tell us so.

I think if anyone is going to stress themselves out over details, then you're right, it's totally not worth it. But I think it's the details that will distinguish your day/night from other weddings.

I agree. Don't stress yourself out over the little things. It is not worth it but I am glad that I did all the little details that I did because it was what I wanted to do and I knew that each one of my guests appreciated the time and effort I put into each little detail.

Chinchilla I am so agreeing with you.
I agonized over so much. The hall, the dress, the flowers, the favors lol so much that I made myself sick. BUt I decided not to spend extra $$ on over the top centerpieces, I chose rather to invest in tasty favors lol.

Most of our guests were dancing, we did simple but elegant centerpieces (which everyone wanted to take home..which I am glad we didnt do high centerpieces since everyone was able to get something besides the favors..which I might add people ate at the hall because one person opened a box of the chocolates and said it was good..so I got the pleasure of seeing people eat the favors that I had agonized over...lol Thats what makes me feel good to see people enjoying my efforts. Poeple do remember the overall effect and a few will notice certain details. I dont really care if people did or not..my biggest fear was people having fun and to me it wasnt important if they tell me if the hall was pretty etc..all I want to hear is did they have fun..

I do see your point about not going overboard but people do notice. Especially if it's something new and different. I got compliments on the things that stood out from other weddings and I also had a lot of engaged couples that said they got a lot of ideas from my wedding.

I would say have fun and you only get married once so why not go all out!!

Thanks for the advice -- it is great to hear from those who have lived it. Like everything else, the secret is to keep everything in moderation, I would imagine....small details are lovely but not at the expense of your sanity.

Re: Details of a wedding... (tip)

I had fun with the little details of a wedding and my guests noticed it, and you know what? I noticed the absence of little details at a wedding I went to recently and a few people who had gone to both weddings, said that mine was more personal and really expressed DH and me.

I am glad I did the little things. If I could afford it, I did it. I didn't spend money I didn't have, though.

Go with what works for you, but don't ever think for a minute that NO ONE will notice. Just because they don't mention that they saw something, doesn't mean they didn't notice.

Re: Details of a wedding... (tip)

In reflecting back on my own wedding, I would say it was a 50/50 split.

50% of my guests did appreciate that the paper on my placecards matched the paper that the directions were printed on. They also loved the calligraphy, almonds on the tables, custom made thank you cards.

Others were outside smoking cigarettes all night and probably didn't even realize that they were guests at a wedding. So, for them, all of my hard work on the details was pointless.

But, we don't have the choice to work on details for ONLY those guests who will appreciate them...oohhhh, if only we could!!!

Re: Details of a wedding... (tip)

Thanks for the tip ! I love hearing what bride's think AFTER the wedding hoopla has settled !

I think it all depends on the bride, what is important to her, and what type of day she wants to have.
I have gone to weddings where I've walked out and said 'why waste so much time/money on such and such, I THINK A, B and C is SO much more important' Well, obviously that bride did not think so !!.......but I'm sure someone will say the same for my wedding too !! - As long as you do all of those little things for YOU to complete the vision for your day, I don't think you'll regret it. - If you're doing it to impress someone else, or you're going to be disappointed and/or upset if someone does not notice/comment on all of your hard work, it may not be worth it in the end. - B/c the only people who notice, are going to be the people that AGREE on the importance........
