DH can be such a PITA sometimes - advice please

DH can be such a PITA sometimes - advice please

So I have this good friend from college that I don't see very often, but I've remained pretty close with. Let's just say she has REALLY bad judgement when it comes to men. Not too long ago she was dating this guy who told her all sorts of absurd lies (he was an astronaut turned doctor, when he was really an EMT is just an example). I didn't realize how dysfunctional the relationship was until we were on the phone one night and she told me she was scared of him sometimes. When I asked her why, she said that 'he liked to play with knives' Anyway, she finally saw the light and got out of the relationship.

Recently she's been back in touch with a guy she dated when she was 17 or 18. I've heard about him before and he sounds pretty decent. They had been emailing and stuff and decided to meet up for a weekend in Paris. Well, my friend knew that this guy had a girlfriend, but according to him she had gone on vacation alone because he couldn't make it due to his work schedule, although he had a few days off and wanted to get out of town (he's American but lives in London). Anyway, when my friend comes back from the Paris tryst she sends me this huge long email about how it was great to see him, she still has feelings for him, etc BUT he's actually married! He tells her it isn't going well, blah, blah, blah. I'm sure there was some hooking up, but I dont' know the extent. As it all progresses, his wife comes home and confesses to having an affair with the person she was visiting (a mutual friend of theirs in Canada) and she leaves him. Now my friend sounds as if she's being reasonable about this - going on about it would never work due to distance, she's not going to get involved, etc. But I know she sort of feels like this guy could've been a really important relationship in her life if they werent' so young when they first met.

ANYWAY, she's coming to visit me this weekend, arriving tomorrow morning around 9am. I have to work until 2, but I was trying to work out with her where we should meet up, if she wants to go directly to my apartment DH is working from home tomorrow, etc. and then she tells me Oh, Tim wants to meet me at the airport and I'll probably spend most of the day with him. and says she thinks it'd be fun if we (me, her and DH) meet up with him later on for drinks/dinner.

Now, I'm not annoyed that she's spending the day with him (although I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't a teeny ulterior motive involved in her visit in the first place), and I'm happy to have dinner/drinks whatever. I only know what she's told me about his situation, and I'm not in any place to judge him, but before I even got the suggestion out of my mouth, DH says he is NOT going to go out with this guy (I've obviously been relaying the story to him as it was unfolding) just because he thinks the guy is totally playing my friend.

I know my DH has her best interests at heart, and I know the guy sounds sketchy...but how do I keep him from totally embarrassing me by refusing to go???? I guess I can tell her he already has plans...I don't know....

Can DH say he has a huge amount of work to do tomorrow? That might work if he is willing to keep quiet about his bad feelings about the guy.

Yeah, I don't think you need to say anymore than 'DH couldn't come, he had other plans, but he sends his regards.'

That will buy you some time.

It is short notice, so it is definitely believable that he couldn't make it. What a tough situation...I know I would go for my friend, but I would have a hard time being nice to the guy knowing what he has done.

that's really tough!
i have a friend who is constantly choosing terrible people and making excuses for them also!!!
her current boyfriend is somewhat of a tool...but no one has the nerve to tell her because he is a semi-nice guy...
DH just deals with it when we go out with them....but I am sometimes afraid that he'll say something - becuas ehe can be rather upfront about things....
if dh refuses to go, just tell her something came up....and then you go and try to find out more about this guy for her sake!!!!

Yeah, you could just say he is busy.

Is there anyway you can convince him to go? Maybe tell him that maybe if you both met him in person, & still think he is an @ss, your friend will be more likely to listen to believe it herself.
