DH is so allergic...

DH is so allergic...

We recently brought home a new kitten and she's too cute, but DH has been gradually getting more and more allergic to her! He never really thought he had allergies to cats since his parents had an outdoor cat and he was always around my moms cats and he was fine!

He was okay in the beginning with our new kitten, but recently he has been sneezing non-stop...

I'm so sad b/c I don't want to give her up, but I feel so bad seeing DH sneezing and being stuffy every single day! Is there anything we can do or would he have to take an allergy pill every day for the next 20 years???

I am beyond allergic to kitty cats...

Tell him to stay away from hi eyes andface..once he touches them it is all over and a sneeze itch fest begins...

also the cleaner the house is the better-or try and keep the kitty in just one area ( ***** for Kitty though)..that way hubby has a place to go...maybe vacuum each day and get a filter for the air

I know that I can deal with a kitty for a liitle while but I could never live with one...

sorry Jess..taht *****

If you don't want to give her up, then he'd probably have to get medication (zyrtec)which is prescribed or over the counter meds..but he'd probably have to take them forever. It could be the type of hair she has? I'm sorry

I would have him go to the dr. my friend grew up around cats all her life and when she moved into her FH house was so allergic to his cat ....it turned out it wasn't that cat it was a product that was being used on the cat that she was allergic too

also, isn't there an allergy shot he can take?

I used to be really allergic to cats, but after living with my sister's cat for a while I eventually got used to it. It's true, if I touched the cat and then my face I would get red and itchy, but other than that I was eventually fine.
Also, maybe he can try Claritan in the meantime or even get allergy shots???

I'm sorry to hear that DH is allergic Jess! I agree with the girls, see if something like Claritin can help, perhaps it's a mild case that can be allevated by that.

awwww....that poor tiny kitten didn't mean it!

has he ever been around an indoor cat before? did he know this would happen? maybe in time it will go away/lessen.

Re: DH is so allergic...

Thanks girls!!!!

I posted this on LIF too and the girls gave me so much hope! I told DH about the air purifier today and he thinks that's a great idea too. Hopefully, like the girls on LIF said, he will build up a tolerance to her!!!

I never knew you could build up a tolerance, I thought when you had an allergy that was it. This is great news... hopefully in the next month he will be better around her. He's not as allergic as some of you, but he does get stuffed up and sneezes... mostly at night when we're in bed. The kitten crawls all over the bed (and on our pillows) at night so that may be causing it. I love when she sleeps with us, but that might have to stop...

Keeping my fingers crossed!!

Re: DH is so allergic...

Many allergies fade/go away. My daughter's uncle found out at 18 [after years of weird nose issues they contributed to constant breaking of his nose] that he was prettymuch allergic to the world...grass,trees, dust, pollen, pet hair/dander...and now about 5 years later, he works in landscaping and doesn't take a single med. for it....he was on daily allergy shots!

My FH is highly allergic too and I have two cats for a long time that I would NOT get rid of... He knew he would of been the one to leave, not the cats (hee, hee).

He went to the doctor and the dr. gave him sinular and he's FINE. I highly recomend Singular!

Good luck.

I am allergic to cats and I have 3 of them!!! My advice, tell him to wash his hands everytime he touches the cat. This way, no dander in the eyes or the nose. PLUS, get a prescription for Allegra. I tried Zyrtec but it knocked me on my arse and I was so tired. So I switched to Allegra and it has been AWESOME!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

ETA: I also take Singulair for my asthma and the combination of the Allegra and the Singulair works for me

Re: DH is so allergic...

I'm deahtly allergic to cats and medications help me, so I can at least visit people, but I could never live with one because they only 'help'. They don't make the symptoms disappear for me. And my DH loves cats. I wish I could get him one.
