DH traveling to South Africa - can he bring back any diseases?!
I guess this is a question for my dr, but until I speak to her again, would anyone know if malaria and any other potential disease from South Africa can be brought back and given to me?
I called his dr a few wks to ask about vaccines and malaria pills, but they were pretty useless. I found info online about travelers protecting themselves with pills but DH doesn't feel it's necessary to take them (he's not going to be out in the safari or anything....just the touristy areas)
I hope that's enough for him but now I'm wondering about myself?

I would NEVER travel without taking the pills Teri. Why take a chance like that? You only need to take one pill a week for a couple of weeks- no big deal. The vaccines are never bad to update either.
In your condition DH needs to understand that his health is just as important to protect as your own. JMO

I went there a couple years ago - I know that it was mandatory for me to take the malaria medication for one month prior to and one month after the trip. I was also required to get like 6 different vaccinations - I don't even think they will let you in the country without being vaccinated against yellow fever. Even though he will not be out on safari, your DH can still come into contact with any number of insects, etc.

DH is going with a TON of co-workers and he said none of them are getting vaccines or pills at all. He was told that since he's staying in the touristy area it's not needed. I think that's Cape Town? He had also heard that many of the pills have side effects and he doesn't do well with many pills to begin with so he didn't want to be sick for nothing,
I didn't even think about my own condition until this weekend so now I'm not sure.

Michele - you read my mind! I had just decided to call my OB....DH's dr is of no help at all!
I want to see what my dr says (she's out this week but it's a practice so others are covering).
