did anyone add crinoline to their dress instead of wearing a slip?

I went for my first fitting yesterday and the seamstress suggested adding a few more layers of crinoline directly to the slip attached to my dress instead of an additional slip.

my concern is that this would not have the puffy effect a regular slip has...

has anyone done/did this and if so, would you mind posting pics?
