Did anyone do a 'dollar dance' at their wedding?

Original post by tinkerwdw

This is something that I guess is very popular in weddings down south- my FH family keeps asking if we are going to do it- one of his GM said his wife got 1000 in cash doing it at their wedding- but to me, it seems a little tacky?

Did anyone do this at their wedding- where people give you money to dance with you?

I wouldn't do it, but i've seen it done and it's okay for a small wedding. But since we are having 250 people I can't imagine everyone waiting around in a LONG line just to dance w/ us for 5 seconds! It just seems like a waste of time and like others said, we will most likely get cash from everyone anyway, so asking for more would be wierd. :)

Yeah I mean, it just seems like it would break up the party. I want to dance with my HUBBY not 200 people!

It is very popular in the Filipino culture (seen it done at Filipino weddings in NY and outside of NY) as well in the Latino culture. Also seen in done in PA and other places but as everyone said unless it is something that your family culture normally does, I wouldn't do it...that being said, it is YOUR wedding sooo anything you really want...

My cousin did it at her PA wedding. I thought it was kind of cute. Totally would not have flown at our wedding though.

My SIL did it at her wedding to my bro upstate. She wore a lil white bag on her arm and every time a guy brought her a dollar during that song he would cut in and get to dance with her.

It was kinda weird, I had never seen it b4, but it was cute at the same time. It was boring to watch, I agree, and I said then that I didn't want to do it at my wedding!!!

It's definitely a Filipino wedding thing, everyone on my side of the family is expecting this. I'd like to, since it isn't weird to me, but I'm kind of worried about what FH's family would think. (FYI-- FH is Italian and his family is VERY 'Long Island'.)

I'm wondering if I can somehow promote this as a 'cultural' thing... like play Filipino folk music or something for the dance.

I guess it depends where you're from I'm Latino and have never seen this done at any wedding I have been to...and the whole pinning money to me thing sounds scary.

The money dance i know of is a european tradition and they play an ethnic song and throw money at the bride and groom. My fiance is european and i have seen it at every european wedding we have been at.

My DH is greek orthodox and every wedding we've gone to on his side of the family has done this. But I am told it's a greek tradition -or something to that extent. No one is shoving dollar bills down your dress-they throw it at you. I guess its Good Luck.

I'm not Greek and I always loved watching this at my Greek friends weddings. My friends just recently told me that all of this money goes to the band! Not the couple I would throw bills like crazy thinking it would go to the couple. I didn't think it was cheesy until I heard that the money went to the band. All the money SHOULD go to the couple always at these dollar dances for the honeymoon or something.

In any event, it's a cultural thing- meant in good fun- not a charity drive. I think most people wouldn't bat an eye at giving ONE dollar as a game, even with the cash that they doled out in the card.

I'm not doing it b/c it's not my tradition, but if I were to see it- I would play long. I don't think anyone should judge a cultural thing as being tacky.

The Money Dance

For those of you who aren't familiar with the Money Dance, it's a centuries old Polish custom where the wedding guests pin money to the gown of the bride. It was done once to help the young couple set up housekeeping and gave them money to begin their new life together. Today, it is more popularly known as the 'money dance' and money may be pinned on both the bride and groom in payment for dancing with them. The Filipino version is called Sayaw ng Pera.

I am Polish and my FH is Greek (Greeks do a similar thing), so we will have a lot of money thrown at us at our wedding.

It is a cultural thing, and I agree, it is kind of tacky but it is part of our different ethnic backgrounds, and weddings should incorporate that.

Will it go to you or your band/DJ?
(I hope it goes to you, lol) I love the dollar dance.

I didn't mean to offend anyone by posting this- it wasn't presented to me as a 'cultural' thing, just as a way for people to give you money! That is what I thought was the tacky part, since people are already spending money to be at your wedding!
However, if it is a cultural thing for your own family, then it represents something to you and should be celebrated!

My cousin did this at her wedding. She lives in Pa. It was a lot of fun and she got to dance with everyone at her wedding. Unfortanatley we can not do this on Long Island because people give a lot more money for gifts here than they do in other parts. People also spend alot less for wedding then we do. I would love to do it so I can say I had a chance to dance with everyone but we just cant..

why do you feel like you can't ?we did this as the last dance - this way i was able to say my thank you for commings to everyone as they came up to dance with me - it has nothing to do with the money - it is a way for everyone to have a chance to talk to you for a little while

The dollar dance is part of my culture, however, I think it is the tackiest thing. I went to a wedding where they had one and you would be surprised that although the guests participated, they couldn't believe they were doing it. But it is true....you will get a lot of money, however, IMO it will be earned the hard way.
