who moved to Georgia and got suspended for wearing a Hempstead, NY t-shirt? It was one of the funniest things I ever heard! They didn't believe him that there was a real town called Hempstead, they just thought it was a drug reference They interviewed town officials from Hempstead and they were like, 'I didn't even think anyone used the word hemp anymore!'

LMAO! Yes, I saw that on Fox 5 news this morning!! I called DH in to watch it with me bc I just could not believe someone would take a TOWN NAME as a drug reference! LMAO - nice light story to start the day with!

Hempstead took on a new connotation this week in a school district near Atlanta.

An assistant principal at Grayson High School in Gwinnett County pulled Terrell Jones out of class Monday, mistaking the 'Hempstead, NY 516' logo on his T-shirt as a reference to marijuana.

Jones, who moved to Grayson from Hempstead, had to persuade school officials to look up the town on the Internet before they would let him go back to class. The assistant principal apologized once he realized the misunderstanding, said Sloan Roach, spokeswoman for the county schools.

Jones got to keep his shirt on, and though he could not be reached for comment Thursday, the Associated Press reported he said he will wear it to school in the future as well.

Hempstead's namesake actually has nothing to do with illegal drugs. The town's Web site said it may have been named for Hemel-Hempstead, England, or Heemstede, Netherlands.

Village of Hempstead Mayor James A. Garner said he's heard people refer to hemp in the municipal name and even received comments about his license plate, which says 'Hemp 1.'

'Anyone could question it, I guess, not knowing the real meaning of it,' he said.

Still, he said, Hempstead should be somewhat familiar to people around Atlanta because he was recently there for a national conference for mayors and was the president of the event.

Garner said he didn't think the village of Hempstead had created the shirt Jones was wearing.

when i went to college a lot of people thought it was funny that there is a town on LI called Hicksville. I never even thought of it, but I guess that could be where all the hicks live

Could you imagine the look on the kid's face?
'Um...no, it's where I used to live??!?!?!?'

And the school officials refuse to apologize becuase they feel that it's their right to make sure students aren't wearing anything inappropriate. Fine. I'm all for that, but when you make a mistake, apologize!

Some of my friends from upstate didn't believe me when I mentioned Hicksville one day. I had to find something that had the name of the town on it to show them.

One Long Island town name that my non-NY friends always love is 'Hicksville.' They always get a good laugh out of that one!

That is so Funny! My best friend went to Cortland and some kid was like 'im from Hicksville' and she was like 'I live in Levittown right near Hicksville' And everyone just stared at her. He was like Its not where I am from its just I live in a hick town. LOL She felt like an Arse!
