Did anyone ever have to have work done on their gums?

Did anyone ever have to have work done on their gums?

Last time I was at the dentist he said I should have gum treatments done (something about the spaces between my teeth becoming larger). It sounded like a very painful process (pulling the gums down with a pick) and expensive (I think $2000). Has anyone had it done? I don't know if it is necessary or not...

A co-worker of mine has it done every few months, she said is is quite painful.
My dentist told me a while back that I should go to the periodontist but - I just can't.

ugh, me too. I can't deal with that pain, but he was telling me if I don't get it fixed my babies might have low birth weight and die and I might get diabetes...
