Did anyone Ferberize...UPDATE, Lyla slept 8 hours straight!!!

Please share your experience if you did. I am so torn about doing it, but I'm desperate!

Re: Did anyone Ferberize?

Someone bought the book for me and I loaned it to a friend last month. She used it with her 15 month old and it worked like a charm. Good luck!

I have the no cry sleep solution. But I haven't even read it yet. I must admit I'm not ready for him to move out of our bed

Re: Did anyone Ferberize?

I tried the No Cry Sleep Solution - didn't work...made things worse for us. I tried the Baby Whisperer - also didn't work. What finally worked was the good old fashioned cry it out method (not Ferber). I did use this awesome book as a reference - Healthy Sleep Habits

Basically I just finally did what my Mom and others used to do before there was 'Ferber', etc. It is a bit of tough love, and I always vowed I would never ever do it, but in the end, I reached my breaking point and we ALL (Ryan included) needed to sleep better. He now cannot wait to get into his crib at night and for naps...he's in at 7 and I don't hear from him until 7!! It only took 4 nights of minimal crying (we were lucky). The first night he cried for 20 minutes at bedtime, then 20 minutes at 2 am. The second night he cried for 20 minutes at bedtime. The third night, 10 minutes at bedtime, the fourth night 5 minutes at bedtime and after that he would just roll out of my arms into the crib and put himself to sleep...

I would do it again for my next child...it's not for everyone, but it definitely worked for us. As you can see, I tried multiple methods, but they just never worked for us. Good Luck - I think this was the hardest thing we had to do - I cried myself the first two nights!!

Re: Did anyone Ferberize?

I have the NCSS, it's a great book and I do believe in all of her parenting styles, however it's not working for us (ME) at all. I tried letting her cry, while going in every 5 min. yesterday for a nap. This went on for an hour, then I picked her up nursed for 2 min on my bed and she fell asleep for 2 hours. Her usual 'naps' are 20-30 min, so something worked. Then at night, we let her cry a bit, but DH couldn't do it so he just went in there and kept 'shsshing' her while she was in her sleep (she was overtired by then) and she finally fell asleep for 2 hours (again great progress) and then when she woke up she came to my bed. I know that if we really Ferberize and expect it to work we have to be consistent, but I don't know if Peter will go for it. He's not as desperate as I am I guess!

Re: Did anyone Ferberize?

We Ferberized right after we moved into the house. It took ALOT of patience...some nights, I thought I would just LOSE IT listening to Paul cry , but the consistency and patience really paid off.

Another important point w/Ferber, tho is taking away the bottle or breast to get them to fall asleep. I think you need to decide if you are ready to do that first, and then move forward w/Ferber.

Good luck - this is NOT an easy process, and I would recommend that you and DH are on the 'same page' with the plan before you start - otherwise you'll end up confusing Lyla and that will make matters worse.

Re: Did anyone Ferberize?

we did a form of this...winding her down, lowering the lights in the house, reading a book, putting on baby neptune video while bf her or now giving her a last bottle...and then at a certain time, turing that all off, putting her on my shoulder, rubbing her back, shssing her (this is comforting for her)..and then into the crib with a soft blanket to love.
then I would close the door and when she cried, so did I

it is hard...i would cry too thinking I was not a good mom..but I also knew she needed to get into a rhythm or else she and I would be bone tired.
some nights I would go to bed with a pillow over my ears while rob would listen to her. He stuck with it better than I and would reassure me. He would let me know if she ever got hysterical (not once)..
eventualyl she woud settle down, suck her thumb and go to sleep

now every night at either 730 or 8pm she is ready for bed. I kiss her g night and lay her in the crib, she turns onto her side, grabs her blankey..and closes her eyes

it is tough...make sure hubby and you are on the same page..and it will work over time

the goign in after 5 min then after 10 min did not work for us..it just excited her more...

Re: Did anyone Ferberize?

I couldnt let her CIO. It killed me to listen to my baby upset knowing that she wanted me. I couldnt break that small bit of trust that she has for me. When she cried I am there for her.

SOOOO... When she was little I would BF her to sleep. Then I started taking away to boob before she fell asleep and would lay her down next to me to fall asleep on her own. More recently I will ask her if she is tired and she will say OK and walk into the bedroom and lay down and go to sleep on her own (I am in there with her). Now she goes in to the bed, lays down while I watch her from the door. I am slowly removing myself from the room. Its my way of Ferberizing

Re: Did anyone Ferberize...UPDATE, Lyla slept 8 hours straight!!!

I am so amazed and I don't want to jinx it, but I have to share!! Thanks to my awesome husband, Lyla slept from 7:45 to 10:45 and then from 11 to 8am without nursing and in her crib!!! Okay this is MAJOR breakthrough from a baby who nursed all night and coslept with us. Basically, we didn't Ferberize, I don't know what you call it. We did our routine early and by 7 when I fisrt noticed signs of tiredness, I nursed her until she started fussing and put her in the crib, which she was not happy about.

We did let her cry, however Peter stayed by her side and kept saying 'shhh, it's okay, go to sleep now' over and over again. The first time he did it for about 20 minutes or so before she fell asleep. He said there is no way he will just shut the door and let her cry and that he wants her to feel safe and know that he's there for her. She slept 3 hours and then Peter did the same thing without picking her up and he did come out of the room before she fell asleep. BUT, she was asleep within 5 minutes. I actually didn't even sleep that well b/c I was worried and anxious about when she will wake up, and I was excited about the whole thing too. I couldn't believe how empty her diaper was this morning, it's usually SO full from nursing all night! My breasts were so engorged by 4am, that I had to pump. I don't remember the last time this has happened. The last time Lyla slept more than 4 hours was when she had her 2nd set of shots. She has never slept more than this, except maybe the first 2 weeks of her life.

I guess it's a combination of the routine, looking for cues, and then not picking her up even when she cried is what made her sleep. The fact that DH was there with her makes me feel so much better, I can't do this without him! I'm not sure what I'm going to do about her naps today, it might not be the same b/c she know I'm the one with the milk and Daddy's at work!

It seems so easy that it worked, and I kind of wish we had tried this months ago. But I think we just weren't ready and as knew parents, picking her up everytime she cries is the right thing to do and it's instinctual to do so, so maybe that is what she needed all along, but now we're all ready for change.

Niha, great progress!! That's terrific news!! Good Luck! I bet you will see that the naps get better too. That's what happened with us. He went from 1/2 hour naps on my bed to 2 hour naps in the am and 1 hour naps in the pm in his CRIB!! They say sleep begets sleep, so hopefully this is the start of great sleep for all of you!! Congrats!!

BTW - I could never have done it without my DH either - he was a rock!!

Great news Niha!!!!

After reading this, I realize how very lucky I am with Gianna -- she took to her crib before she was 2 months old and sleeps 10 hours a pop in it!! I know my sister had and still has problems getting my nephew to bed and he's going to be 5!!!

I wish you all good luck and many sleep-filled nights to come!!!
