FH and I are flying coach for our honeymoon, but we are hoping to be upgraded to first class if there is availability. Were any of you upgraded? If so, how did you manage it?

We were upgraded to first class on our flight from LaGuardia to Nassau. I simply asked for an upgrade -- I said we were on our honeymoon (while at the gate) and the woman said she'd put us in first class. It was awesome!

Typically it won't happen in advance but is usually something they do at the gate. Mention it excitedly to everyone you see at the gate and they will usually upgrade you.

No, you don't pay extra for an upgrade.

Well, normally you do, but with this it is usually comped as a gift from the airline -- it is good for them because they want to have you always have great memories of your honeymoon and their airline. Typically even for this it is getting really hard to get upgraded on international flights but to the islands and USA they usually will.

FH & I are so quiet--we never tell people our busines or talk to strangers...no teven for freebies.. it would be nice though. We are only flying to Puerto Rico though.
FH asked if I was going to mention it on our cruise, b/c he doesn't want to have to go to any Honeymoon 'events' but I hear we may get free cake if they know (like that's what we really need on a cruise )
I wouldn't know how to say it with out sounding like Monica from Friends.

I think when we check in I'll just let them know that we're on our honeymoon and if there are any seats available, we would love to be upgraded to first class. It can't hurt to try.

Same here ... and believe me, my 6'5' husband tried VERY HARD to get it from Orlando to LAX ...

We asked for each flight with American and were told the same thing - they don't upgrade except to the next class - they do not skip a class anymore. If you fly coach, business class is next. Even if your flight only has coach and first class, first is not considered the next class up. And needless to say, business class was always booked. So, we got no upgrades.
We also traveled during a busy time of year so the hotels were booked too.
Don't plan your honeymoon counting on upgrades - book what you want and if you get an upgrade, consider it a bonus.

We got upgraded to first class on American both ways - but I think that is more so because DH helped with a medical emergency on our first flight from NY to LA. We did get about 4 bottles of champagne from the stewardesses though. Once we were in Hawaii - we got upgraded to convertiblles, champagne in the hotel rooms - and one of our hotels upgraded us to an oceanview suite!
