Did Anyone Write a Letter...

...to the homeowner of the house you were itnerested in buying?

What did you write? How did it go over with the seller?

i am confused. are you interested in a home and hoping that a friendly letter will help to sway their bid choice?

I have no hopes - just curious.

I have heard of people writing letters to the seller - after putting a bid in - and getting positive results. Just curious if anyone has done this and what the results were.

Yes, we included a personal note with our offer for a house we really wanted, and for which we were in competition with another buyer. It was pretty brief - just explaining what we loved about the house, and how we could foresee it being a great home for our future family (I'm pregnant).

It's a common practice, and if you're a decent writer, I'd recommend it. There's no guarantee it will make a difference, but generally speaking, it can't hurt. There's always the possibility that it will make your offer stand out from others which may be similar. In our case, I think it did help our cause and at least get our offer considered, but we still needed to up our bid to get high enough above the other buyers'.

This gets tricky if you have a real estate agent in the picture. The RE agent would severely frown upon this cause that means they have less control over the situation.

I have heard of people putting the letter through the REA without issues...I guess it's a chance we'd have to take.

Thanks for the input everyone...

Re: Did Anyone Write a Letter...

We actually won the bidding contest with 5 other people because we sat down at an Open House and spoke to the Real Estate agent. We told them how we were just engaged and how we were pre approved and wanted to have a house to live in for the rest of our life.

Well the couple selling were retiring and had lived in the house for 45 years. So they agreed to accept our bid (which was the selling price) and not make us get into a bidding war with others because they loved this house and wanted a younger couple who would take care of it.

So it can work.........I tell everyone to sit down with RE agents at an Open House if you really like the house...they usually will tell the owners good things about you...

when we were looking i fell in love with a house that was so underpriced and my real estate agent told me to bid whatever i could afford and write a letter and appeal to there human side. i wrote an amazing letter that made the ladies at work cry bid 60 grand over asking price and although they said they loved the letter they gave the house to the person that bid 100,000 over asking.

they were asking 339,000
