I think you were much wiser in this case than your husband. It doesn't matter whose mistake it was - it was so long ago. You spared the woman an upset, and probably yourself as well.
I think you should be proud of yourself for just swallowing the comment and learning to let things roll off your back. We all have to learn that, and re-learn it again and again in life! It spares lots of feelings and ulcers, as well.
