FH and I got some caterpillars from his school and we `grew' them. We watched the whole stage of development. They hatched yesterday, so today, we brought them over to my brothers house who has three kids and released them. It was really cool.
So if anyone is in the Massapequa area and they see three painted lady butterflies around..... give them a wave!

everyone I talk to says that they did that, I never did.... we did hatch chicks though

That's so cool- I'd love to see that. We never got to do the caterpillar to butterfly thing in school, but we got to hatch chicks- that was great. We hated when the chicks got bigger and we had to give them to a farm.

I remember vividly the FEAR my teacher put into us.. we had to transfer the cacoons into the box by rolling a peice of masking tape and I remember SWEATING trying to attach the cacoon to the top of the box without dropping it!!!
It is very cool though.. my gram LOVEs butterflies and I ordered her a kit from natural wonders when it was open.
Also.. if you love butterflies you MUST get a 'butterfly' bush... We have two and I took the most AMAZING pics last summer.. We had tons!

i work in childcare and we do this with our classes every year. the process is beautiful, butit kinda grosses me out lol. the blood from when the hatch is gross. i mised them releasing them this year, thats the best part. ~lacey
