Re: Did you have the baby room with you in the hospital?

Michele, I honestly thought I wanted Lyndsey to room with me while in the hospital, but when it came down to it, I was SOOOOO extremely exhausted (from not sleeping for 3 days) that I just let the nurses take her back to the nursery. They brought her to me whenever she fussed, which ended up being every couple of hours, but at least I got SOME rest. I think you have to see how you feel when the time comes. Hope that helps!

I had the option of baby rooming with me, but like melissa said, you are so OVER tired, that you need your sleep. you are awake every 2 hours to feed that baby, there is no more day and night. you are so tired you can cry at time (and all the hormones and BF being so new) not meant to discourage you, but just to let you know that its totally normal and OK to want some quiet time to take a nap. if you are BFing you will have to take the baby to feed throughout the nite, unless you tell them to give formula. this is another thing that you will decide that moment. depending on how you feel.
also, i dont know if this sounds crazy, but when you are THAT tired, and you fall asleep, at least for me, I was in such a DEEP Sleep that I probably may not have heard him cry! (and im normally a light sleeper). so i felt safer with him around nurses in good hands.

I marked down on my papers that I didn't want the baby to room-in because I know myself and sleep is very important for my well-being. I am just asking for opinions. I thought maybe I wasn't being fair to the baby, but I think I am.

I did have Lukie all day - they took all the babies to the nursery at night and during the general visiting hours in the evening and it was great. However I did not have a c section like Anna or the exhaustion that both Anna & Melissa had. If you are tired , definitely get the rest you need and dont feel guilty about it.

Liz, I also had him all day, but let him go to the nursery at night. By the time he was done feeding it was time for the next feeding. and all day he slept by my bedside.
I tried to keep myself mobile as far as the c-section. the next morning i was showered and walking around the hospital. it was painful (the cut, the healing, the next few weeks, walking, sitting, laying down, etc) but im sure natural births have their pains too.

Liz reminded me that I did have the baby ALL day long, from 7am to 10pm or so. She was in my room the whole time, while visitors came and everything. I got to 'practice' changing diapers and stuff, which was nice, because you had nurses there to show you exactly what to do.
You should NOT feel guilty in any way if you leave your baby in the nursery. Take advantage of the 48 hours or so that you have in the hospital and get as much rest as you can, because once you get home, it's very hard to relax.

It broke my heart that Tommy was not able to room with me. I had a c section and we had some complications so he was on i v and they were doing tests. First thing the next morning I got out of bed to go to the nursery as soon as they took my iv out. I do not think I would have actually got up that fast otherwise. While we were in the hosp. I had to go into the nursery to feed him and hold him. Everyone was very nice about letting me know when to come in to feed him and when he was awake. It did make me sad to see the other babies in the rooms. If I could I would have had him in my room during the day but I would have gotten sleep at night.

I had the same experience as Elizabeth. I hd Justin all day and they only brought him to me at night for feeding

Prepare yourself to not sleep regardless of whether the baby rooms in or not. Even if you keep the baby with you during the whole day and have him/her go to the nursery at night, you will not get more than 2-3 hours of sleep in one stretch - especially since you are planning to BF. And during those 2-3 hour stretches, nurses will be in and out all night to take your vitals, so that's a disruption too. The best sleep I got during the hospital stay was 4 hours straight w/Paul sleeping on my chest!

JMO, but you only *truly* rest after you get home from the hospital so don't worry about where the baby is while you're in the hospital.

The nurses would take the baby whenever I wanted to sleep. They would bring her to me when she wanted to nurse. There were also times when they would ask me if I wanted them to take her and I would say no. I also fell asleep with her in my arms... Im surprised she didnt fall on the floor!! TG she didnt.

During the day I would have her in the room with me. I would have her go back to the nursery at night for sleep.

great info.

When do I make this decision? Michele when did you fill out paperwork? Was it thru your OBGYN? Or the hospital?

my midwife has me fill out a form when I first got pregnant, but I think the hospital also makes me fill in one. Not sure though.

I plan (hope) to have Peanut room w/ me - especially if I'm lucky enough to get a semi-private or private room. My DH will be w/ me most of the time and many family members, too.

I will definitely return him/her to the nursery when I want to shower or *try* to sleep. I'm going to try to BF exclusively (I made up an index card for the bassinet stating 'Breastfeed Only - No bottles or pacifiers, please!'), so I expect that they'll bring Peanut in at all hours!!

Re: Did you have the baby room with you in the hospital?

Most hospitals have a mandatory rule that a pregnant woman has to fill out her admission paperwork prior to her last month of pregnancy. This includes a lot of information - like who will be responsible to make any life-altering decisions about your health god forbid something serious happens. I am pretty sure they want this completed ahead of time b/c when you are in labor, you cannot think about paperwork - it's only logical!

Re: Did you have the baby room with you in the hospital?

I agree with the lack of sleep part, although, exhausted enough, you will sleep no matter what. Separate of the baby, as Claud mentioned, they come in all the time. Plus, I had Luke at 1:50am so I went up to the room around 4:30 - 5:00am and it was a semi-private room so my roommate was disturbed no doubt. Then she left the next day and that night at around 1am, up came another roommate so it was an hour or so of situating her, her & her DH talking (they were very nice, they tried to be quiet but the nurses were oblivious), bringing the baby in to BF etc. Then I went back to sleep and then they were waking me to feed Luke again. I found myself doing it all in a 'new Mommy bubble', just going along which was fine but next time (God willing) I'll know what to expect.

Good for you with your index card Kathi, definitely stay on top of that.

ETA: They tell you this at the hospital, but never never never hand your baby over to someone who is not wearing all kinds of ID even if they look like a nurse. If you go in the bathroom-or anywhere- bring the baby to the nursery.
