No way. The ONLY person he needed permission from to marry me was ME. I was 32 year old and we lived together but regardless I never liked that tradition.

Yes, he took my parents out to lunch in the city. And waited to the very end to ask. My father knew what was up and he dragged it out as long as possible to make him nervous.
Five days later (he flew back to pick up the ring) he asked me! I think it surprised my parents that he asked so quickly.
