Did you/will you have one of those storks on your front lawn?
DH & I weren't going to have one of those big storks on the front lawn, but my best friend is making me feel like crap about it, saying that we have to have one to take pictures with when we get home.
Just wondering what other people think. Oh, and if you did, what company did you use?
TIA! Cathy

I think it's cute. I don't know how much they cost so I don't know if it's that cute for the price...
Unfortunately, we don't have a lawn here in our co-op, so DH is going to put something on our door.

We had a huge baby boy on our lawn...I think it was 150.00 We got to keep the sign with all the info about him on it.

I really could care less... is that bad?
I figure if DH wants to get one, he can do it and surprise me, if not, no biggie.

I will, my SIL owns a company in Wantaugh who does the storks/babies/ducks.

Nope, my mom will probably make some type of baby boy welcome home wreath for our front door but we don't do the storks in my family.
Too many urban legends or maybe true stories that shows your house has a newborn and all it's stats. It will just be me and the baby in the house without dh so I feel securing without all the info on my front lawn. Same reason why we didn't do an engagement notice or obits with mass times. It just seems to me like it opens you up for trouble... which BTW totally ***** but there are some crazy people out there..
Just like I would love to have a yellow ribbon out during my husband's deployments but I can't... because it shows it's just me at home.

I had them for both my daughter and son. I really don't believe that someone is coming for your child. A girl at work always says that and I think it is hilarious! We got to keep the star with their 'stats'. It was $75/week to rent. We went through Amanda's Flowers in Holbrook.

With both of my deliveries as I was being pushed into the maternity ward the paperwork states very LARGE 'please do not rent a stork to advertise your new arrival'. This was sent to the hospitals by local police precincts. We were going to do it but as I spoke to more of the nurses the explained the rates of robberies, etc at homes were arrival storks were standing. Sad that our society is at an all time low, but I felt much safer not having one after hearing a bunch of scary stories from a nurse at Stony Brook who's husband is a detective sarg. in Suffolk County.

Thanks. I always thought it was strange to advertise that you have a child in the house, but my friend was making me feel like an overly paranoid crazy lady. I'm glad to see other people had the same reservations.

i'm not a mom yet or expecting but i remember in high school telling my mom how i thought those were cute. she replied by telling me how it is allowing for complete strangers to know everything that is going on inside your home. she asked me not to do that when the time came. just like when you see someone throwing out a box for a new tv or stereo...they leave it on the curb and it is almost advertising that there is new expesnve equipment in the house. i think they are so cute and a great way of saying welcome home, but in this day and age, i would say that it probably isn't the safest thing to do. sad. but i'd rather play it safe.

I'd like something announcing it to the world so to speak but those types of things don't seem too popular here in CO. Maybe I can hunt one down just to be the odd ball on the block.

lol, what do you do, disguise your kids when you bring them in and out of the house? I think that's like not leaving your stroller by the door, or a tricycle in the driveway....but anyway! My husband surprised me with a stork, I thought it was great. Everyone in the nieghborhood knew I was pregnant, and the sex was a surprise, so it was really fun. We have the keepsake in her room, and it was a great photo-op thing.

You know, after reading the posts saying it was bad, I was about to agree, but you make a very good point. It's not like your baby is going to be a complete secret. I'm not sure if I will get one, merely for financial reasons. It's adorable, but if we bought one, I don't even think we'd have the space to store it after putting it on our lawn.

I agree, but there are people who are not on your nighborhhod on a regular basis and this is where the trouble begins, some of them lurk in neighborhoods scoping out for these type of things. Just like when there is a wedding or a funeral, people actual scan neighborhoods and if they see a bride leaving the home they know there will be many hours of an unoccupied home, same things goes for a funeral. It is just a WARNING and it is enforced by local police precincts so I wouldn't go againist their advice, especially since they have good reason to post such warnings, beleive me, lots of things don't make it into the newspaper, you'd be frightened if you heard of some the incidents, I know I was!

You make a good point as well. I'm on the fence with this one, but my best bet is just to NOT get one.

You don't actually buy the whole stork, you rent it and get the star or whatever they include with the child's name, birthdate, time and weight. I understand the point of people knowing too much of everyone else's business but you also can't live your life paranoid.

I didn't do it. I don't really know any/many people in my neighborhood so was like why bother....

I heard about the not advertising thing too but I think the bigger giveaway that a baby was in the house over the giant stork was the boxes upon boxes of baby stuff we put out after she was born; the stroller box, the swing box, the diaper boxes, etc.
