Difference between suit and tux?

Difference between suit and tux?

FH just bought a nice pinstripe suit that he may wear for the wedding. But he wanted to go look at tuxes also, just in case he saw something else he liked. Everything in there looks like a regular suit to me. I even asked him where they kept the tuxes!

This may seem like a stupid question, but what exactly is the difference between a suit and a tux? I know the superformal tuxes have the tails on the jackets....but the regular tuxes at Mens Warehouse and stuff like that look just like suits to me.

Re: Different between suit and tux?

you know i am searching and so far it looks like

a tux has a 'sheen' to the lapel

a tux does not have three buttons

a tux usually has a shiny stripe down the side ( not all the time though so this is confusing )

a tux doesnt have belt loops bc they cant be worn with a belt. . .

Re: Difference between suit and tux?

heres what i found

also depends what type of tuxed, theres also those english styled ones with the tail coats

What's the difference between a suit and a tuxedo? Tuxedo jackets have a satin lapel, tuxedo pants have a satin stripe down the outside legs, tuxedo shirts have pintucking (pleats on the bodice of the shirt) as well as being compatible with studs and cuff links, and patent leather shoes are worn with tuxedos. Suits have a self lapel (same fabric as the body of the coat), no satin stripe down the pants, a dress shirt and nice shoes are worn. Now you know!

all the tuxes i've seen or that friends/relatives wore had pockets b/c that was how they adjusted their shirts properly.
the pockets had holes in them to help with the shirt tucking.
however you couldnt really keep anything in the pockets

Re: Difference between suit and tux?

here, it depends on whether you get traditional or contemporary

Traditional style tuxedos are typically manufactured with a 1 or 2 button front. These jackets have been recommended in the industry for many years and never seems to be phased out by the manufacturers. Highly recommended for a shorter gentleman. To achieve a more contemporary look you can opt for a style with a 3 to 6 button front. Here you will find the lapels are shortened down the front of the jacket to leave room for the extra buttons. These jackets are recommended for taller gentlemen with a thinner build. Keep in mind, jackets with 3 to 6 buttons can be found on many tuxedos today, however, they may not be very popular in the years to come. If you plan on investing in a tuxedo with many years of use, we suggest opting for a style with either the 1 or 2 button closure.
