FH and I have decided to adopt a dog. We are interested in Chihuahuas and Yorkies, but we want to know what the main personality, intelligence, etc. differences are between the two breeds.
Does anyone have any insight to help us decide which breed is best for us?
Thanks.

Re: Differences between Chihuahuas and Yorkies??
My boss has a yorkie and I have a chihuahua.... we both bring our dogs to the office, so I am around the yorkie quite often.
However- keep in mind- these are sweeping generalizations- individual dogs are different JUST like people are different. They all have different personalities and you should get a dog from a reputable breeder as they would breed into the dog better character traits.
Also- keep in mind that there is no such thing as a tea cup dog.. just like people, there are big dogs and small dogs.. breeders that sell 'small' dogs breed that trait into the dogs (breeding small parents to have small babies, just like humans). At least in small Chihuahuas- ultra small dogs can have hypoglycemia (sp?) and other internal problems. White dogs (white fur) are more prone to this than darker haired chihuahuas.
Now onto personality. Surprisingly, the Yorkie is MUCH more 'barkie' than my chihuahua. This could be that i trained my chihuahua VERY well not to bark- but even from birth she didn't seem to be too much of a barker. The yorkie also seems to sufffer from separation anxiety and mood swings- again, this is probably more to do with the training than the breed.
If I were you, I'd try & hang in some dog parks and meet different dogs within the two breeds.
Also- i like my chihuahua b/c I don't have major grooming bills like I would if I had a yorkie...
I would also recommend the chihuahua for dummies book- it helped me a lot to learn about training and the breed.
Good luck- and please feel free to FM me with any questions.

Re: Differences between Chihuahuas and Yorkies??
I have a yorkie and he is VERY energetic, suffers from separation anxiety (does not like to be left alone at all) and he is very difficult to train and housebreak. On the positive note he so is loving and affectionate. He is the best for company. He loves to play or just to hang out. They are a lot of work, esecially at the beginning but they are very sweet dogs.

My yorkie is 3.75 pounds and that is as big as he gets. They are such great dogs but very stubborn. If you have the time and patience (you need lots of it!) I would highly recommend them. Let me know if you need to know anything esle.
