DILEMMA WITH GUEST...PLEASE HELP

DILEMMA WITH GUEST...PLEASE HELP

I have a friend whose mother is sick. She RSVP'd to the wedding a month ago that she would be coming, and then her mom got sick. I received an email last night from her saying she had a 'slight problem'. She said she meant to put in for the day off but didn't and now can't because she has to take her mother to the doctor on the Monday following my wedding and has to work until 5:30pm the day of the wedding. She said she'd be at the reception around 9:30pm.

Now here is the dilemma....while I appreciate her letting me know and understand her situation, and am flattered at her still wanting to come, I think 9:30 is a little too late. We are paying for the hall on Thursday...and I'm not sure if I should include her. Mainly because:
1. We are paying per plate
2. Dinner will be over by then
3. The reception ends at 11:30.

I'm not sure what to tell her? She said she would 'reimburse me for the plate'? I've never heard of such a thing...but what would you do?

Well I don't think you can really do anything about it at this point bc you've already included her in the list....so basically that place setting is not being used. Just make up a tag for her so she has a place, and when she comes, she comes. If she doesn't, then you can't do anything about it.

Don't let it bother you, and just go with the flow. It's such a small thing to be worried about now, not to mention, you can't do anything about it. You can't 'make' her come. So if she comes, then cool. If not, at least it wasn't a shock to you that day.

The only problem with this is:

We are paying for the hall on Thursday...and I'm not sure if I should include her

If you're paying for the hall on Thursday, then I wouldn't include her. From what you write, your friend seems to be under the impression that you already paid the hall. If dinner is over at 9:30pm when she's scheduled to arrive, I wouldn't include her. If she arrives early, you can discreetly ask someone to set a plate for her. Don't worry, it'll turn out fine.

Leave her off the headcount. If she actually shows after dinner they probably won't charge you b/c she didn't eat, and if they bring her out a plate afterwards, it's not a big deal to pay then. I just put aside enough money to cover 10 extra plates at my reception. If it happens, it happens. Right now I know of 4 people that are coming that I didn't pay for, and one that isn't coming that I did pay for.

i think it was nice for her to let you know. I think she will still pay for her plate so maybe you can see if the hall can save her dinner for when she gets there? You are paying for it so im sure they can heat it for her...we had to do that once and the hall didnt make a big issue over it esp being we told them in advance. All they asked from us was to know what her her hubby wanted so they had the food ready!

if you didn't pay yet, then just leave her out of the count. You can always pay afterwards. I would rather pay after the fact, then pay up front and the plate not be used.

Just leave her out of the count, and it will all work out.
