Dilemna

Hi everyone,
I am new to the post, but I have been reading these post since I got engaged and I love them!!! I got engaged about a month ago and we started talking about dates and where we were going to live after we got married. My FH is POlish he has lived in the US for about 10 years and he owns a house. His parents are in Poland and he lives here in his house with his 2 brothers(who are older and both married, have houses and wives in Poland) and his sister who is younger. So, we started talking about where we would live when we get married and I told him I don't not feel comfortable moving into a house with his brothers. His sister I don't mind she is young and in college, so I don't mind if she lives with us until she gets settled, but living with his brothers really bother me. I feel like I would be moving into an apt, not a house. I told him I want to start a future with you, I do not want to start a future with your family. He said it will only be a year until he sells this house and we buy our own house. I understand he wants to help his brothers and he said they will be moving back to Poland soon(they have been is his house for 5 years and hardly pay any rent), but when is soon and who is to say that when we buy our own house they wont want to come with us. Am I over reacting? Am I being selfish in asking him to tell his brothers to move out? They have two years to get them self settled, we are getting married in 2007.

Not knowing the whole story makes this hard. I think I would feel the same way. I would want to be just with him. His brothers have 2 years, it's not like they are getting kicked out now. Also, maybe you want to just rent an apt for yourselves until the house sells?

first, congrats on your engagement!

that is a very tough situation. as much as I love my husband, I don’t know that I would have been able to move in with him with his siblings living there too! If you feel this strongly about it (and I don’t blame you one bit!), you should put your foot down about it, I know I would.

good luck

I understand where you are coming from, but if the situation were reversed I would resent my DH telling me I had to kick my siblings out. If they are saving money by living there, and fully intend to return to Poland, I would let it be, or else both of you rent an apt until the house sells. Family is so important, and you don't want to get off on the wrong foot with them over this.

I completly understand that and I know it would be hard for me to say that to my brothers. But, I also know that I would not have to tell my brothers they would not want to be there, they would not impose like that. His sister who is young said as soon as you guys get married I am out of here and she is the one that we should be helping. The sister is a complelty different story for me. For some reason with his brothers it just bothers me. I dont feel comfortable.....

I am sure it has to do with the fact that they are married and you'll have to deal with a ton of in laws who have a certain way of running the house. I totally sympathize with you. Be honest with your FH. 2 years is a long time, so they should be ready to leave by then.
