DINING ROOM Color IDeas ??

DINING ROOM Color IDeas ??

So now that we're refinishing the hardwood floors, I'd like to also take down the wallpaper and buy a corner curio, and 'dress up' my dining room. YAYY!

My dining room is right next to my living room (its kinda one huge room 'divided' (high ranch). Well my living room is in the olive green family. Couches are dark olive, walls are medium olive and ceiling is faint olive. I dont plan to redo that. I did that to my liking as soon as we moved in Now I want to chose a color for the dining room that wont look too horrible with that green right next to it, and a color that wont look too similar, I like the 'divided' feeling that really makes it feel like 2 rooms.

I dont want to go to dark, I want to keep that open airy feeling. but I HATE whites and beiges.
So any colors that I can mix and match drapes with as the years go by..

THANKS for any ideas!
anyone want to post pics of their dining rooms, that would be cool too !

I did a two-tone in my DR. Top 1/2 of the walls are a candided brandy (yellow-brown warm tone beige) and the bottom 1/2 is Cottage red. I have a white chair rail in between. The rest of the hallway is the candided brandy color.

We have a hi-ranch too and started our home renovations the reverse way - dining room first. Since the rooms blend together, we tried to create a separation between the two rooms. And we are not afraid to use color and not have them blend!! Sometimes I think we're nuts, but so far, I am happy.

I will post some pics of our blue and white dining room in progress. you can also see our hardwood floors I posted about in your other post.

I guess I'm now looking for suggestions for colors for our living room!!

great ideas girls!

Im not a big fan of chair rails for some reason But yours all look GORGEOUS!

I dont know what color to do ! AHHHH. Trish youre right, maybe it doesnt need to blend, well actually i dont want it to, but i also dont want it to be a bad combo. Like although I LOVE the red/brown combo i'd hate it to look like Christmas in my house year round, LOL (red-green)... Im thinking maybe a yellowish orangish-brownish? LOL.

Has anyone done sponge painting in dining rooms, is it not appropriate for dining rooms?

trish-youre floors look awesome!

I think a terracotta color would look really pretty with the olive. I like that color in the DR & kitchen for some reason...

Anna, you probably can't tell in the pictures, but we did the blue in sponge painting. It was a dark blue sponged on to a lighter blue. We wanted to 'soften' up the dark color. It's very subtle, which is why it didn't show up in pics. The pics don't do it justice.

I am thinking of doing my dining room in like a 'mud' color. Sort of light gray, but a little brownish, too. I think it will look good with the color furniture we are getting (antiquy in color)

Trish- now that I looked closer, I can see the sponge effect. Gorgeous!!

Thanks again for the ideas, girls !

Re: DINING ROOM Color IDeas ??

I would go with a warm yellow for the DR. Maybe Benj Moore Windham Cream or the color we just used in our LR BM Fresh Air.

We have been painting our LR & DR all weekend! I still it doing a faux finish in the hallway. Anyway on to colors. We did the DR in a soft sage - BM Weekend Getaway and the LR in pale yellow BM Fresh Air. We have an L shaped LR/DR with a definate division. The LR looks a little too yellow right now but I think with the furniture and window treatment in it will be fine. I have always made the mistake of going too light in the past so I just went for it this time.

Hi Anna,
I love helping with things like this since I went to school for interior design. I am not working in the field right now and miss it. You could work in reverse and look for a window treatment first that you like. If you want the rooms to blend, find a fabric that has some olive green and other colors too. Use one of the other colors as the wall color. I think the creamy or buttery yellow suggested by others is great. The one I love is Ben Moore Autumn Gold. I also think Benjamin Moore- Fall Harvest (reddish) looks awesome with the olive family. Check out their site. Click on 'Let's paint'. It allows you look at colors on walls next to each other. I had to guess what color olive you have now and I could have been totally off, so I'm sorry if this is not your tastw. Have fun playing. I love the preview paint feature.

I also think I'm leaning toward that warm yellow. Sounds nice and open and airy. and I can always change window treatments and can match lots of colors to it. I definately want to do a faux finish in my entry way and corridor. Right now it has wallpaper that we plan to take down, so thats a few steps down the road...

Victoria, thanks for that website! Its hard to find the right green on the site! Every time i clicked on one that I thought was IT, it showed up really different in the photo.

So what can I do for my entry way? Id want that natural, yet not boring, LOL. I have an oak banister and our hardwood floors are an oak shade. We'll porbably keep it that shade of wood when we refinish them, maybe a tad lighter.

THANKS !!

Re: DINING ROOM Color IDeas ??

I just wanted to report back on my faux painting in the hallway. I dont think I like it. I keep going back and forth between I hate it and its ok.

I started with the the bottom 29 in of the wall in the green from the DR and the rest of the wall in the yellow I used in the LR and then glazed the yellow with a yellow green mix using a ragging off tech. The effect looks good I just dont like the colors. I dont know how to fix it
Any suggestions?????

Re: DINING ROOM Color IDeas ??

A red would be wonderful. It is the complement of green and promotes a appetite. Just choose one that is not too bright, and somewhat creamy to go with the green in your living room.

I don't mean pink though.

Re: DINING ROOM Color IDeas ??

a red or terracot color like they suggested!

Re: DINING ROOM Color IDeas ??

Although the reds mentioned sound nice, I dont think I'd like them next to the green. Although it would look great at Christmas With yellow, always go lighter than you think. My experience with yellows has been that they always look much brighter on the walls. Moreso than any other color for some reason.

Let us know what you decide. What color is your dining room furniture. You may have already mentioned it but I didnt see it....too lazy to look through....

chmlenger your walls look great!
