Re: directions for diy cake card box

I have made two of these so far, as gifts for friends' weddings. What I did was I got inexpensive round boxes (brown paper mache-style ones) from AC Moore in three sizes. With coupons you can get these for under 30 bucks.

I use the largest box, upside-down, with the lid velcro-ed on (this way when the couple wants to take out the cards they just take off the bottom). For the other two boxes, discard the lids and turn them upside-down. Trace each smaller box's outline onto the larger box below it. I cut about .5 inch INSIDE this line, using a box cutter/precision knife. I cut the slot to insert cards on the top of the smallest box-- only do this if your smallest box is large enough to fit the width of a large envelope. Otherwise, use the front of the second box.

Once the boxes are cut, then I painted them.I personally find that fabric-wrapped boxes do not look clean and neat, so I painted the ones I made and I think they looked great. Just be sure to use a nice pearl-finish, glossy spray paint.

Once the paint is dried, stack them up and affix with hot glue. I decorated the most recent one with pretty, sparkly white Martha Stewart paper flowers tiny glittery appliques trailing down one side, and satin ribbon in the color of the bridesmaid dresses wrapped around the bottom of each layer (around the lid on the bottom to kind of mask it/help it blend in). I also lined the top and bottom of the card slot with the ribbon so that you could not see any cuts, just the opening.

I think these come out very very pretty, do the job, and are much less money/effort/etc than fabric-wrapped boxes! I will try to post a pic of the one I made most recently if i can find one!

ETA: This pic does not really do it justice (the paper flowers are so sparkly and pretty), but here is one of the ones I made:

Re: directions for diy cake card box

there is a photo of mine in my diy album (photo taken from camera phone before ribbons were glued on)...will try to post a better one later

I got the square boxes and covered it with fabric...if using fabric its neater to use the squares. i got a set of 3 squares at ac moore for $9.99 (plus they have coupons)

I took the lid off the smallest and mid size boxes but left the lid on the bottom box. I traced the middle box onto the top of the larger box and then cut a hole 1 inch thinner than the box so the cards could fall through from the second layer into the bottom.
I covered each box with fabric using adhesive spray. i attached the boxes to each other using a glue gun. I also used the glue gun to attach the rhinestones and ribbons.
to open the box you just lift up the lid from the bottom box.
