Disability Insurance

The topic of disability insurance and maternity leave have been brought up on this board, and it made me look into some options for me, and I thought I would share.

I am considered a NY state employer, but I work for a local municipality. Not sure why, but my employer does not have to participate in the state disability program. Instead of participating in diability, we get more than average sick time.
Well, a couple of surgeries later, my sick time is not what I would like it to be so I looked into buying supplemental insurance specifically with maternity leave in mind.

Our office offers AFLAC. You know the duck commercials?? I was able to sign up for short term disability. They have different plans, so I won't get into the specifics. The payments will be deducted from my paycheck pretax, so for the plan I chose it will be about $40 a month.

My MOH works in NC for a small firm that doesn't have any programs or policies in place for sick time let alone disability/maternity leave. She is now working with AFLAC and her office to make some of the programs available for her and her co-workers. I'm sure there are other companies out there that do the same thing as AFLAC does.

The only catch, for me anyway is that the coverage does not kick in until January. So if I get PG before January 1, it would be a preexiting condition and I wouldn't be able to use it. So we're are temporarily 'out of business' so to speak as far as ttc, but come January 1, we'll be back

For some reason I don't think that pregnancy would be considered a pre-existing condition. Typically there are different rules regarding pregnancy... but I may be wrong.

If I were you I would definitely speak with someone in HR.

Re: Disability Insurance

I did specifically ask since we are ttc now, and we still have about 6 weeks before the coverage kicks in. It is considered pre-existing. This may differ from program to program though.
