OK we had our rehersal yesterday and everything went great except my parents are divorced so my Dad and his wife walked down the aile first and went to the 2nd row then my mom went and walked into the 3rd row. My mom is unhappy with this and thinks she should have walked down first. Is there any real order for divorced parents to walk down the aile? Thanks I can't believe tomarrow is the big day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Divorced parents Q?
Isn't your dad walking you down the aisle? If you are the groom then yes your mom should go first with her new husband or whomever will walk her down then your dad and wife. Your mom should have the first seat in the second row.

Re: Divorced parents Q?
I would explain to your mom that walking down later in the processional signifies greater importance. (The MOH goes second to last and the bride goes last... e.g.)
Is your dad giving you away? If so, he wouldn't seat his wife. Do you want your stepmom to be escorted down the aisle as part of the processional? If so, she should be seated first, then your mom.
I could see her being upset about being seated behind your father, but I don't know the protocol!

Can they both sit in the same row? If your father is walking in first, have him move to the middle of the row and then have your mom sit at the end but in the same row. My parents are divorced and for my siblings' weddings, they sat in the same row.

Re: Divorced parents Q?
My parents are divorced and both walked me down so I didn't have to worry about order. Then my dad sat in the 2nd row next to his wife and my mom sat in the 1st row, my BMs stood.
Kara is right, your mom can walk down after your dad but your dad should sit in the 3rd row and leave the 2nd row open for your mom (provided the BMs are sitting in the 1st row).

Agreed...this is how we did it....my stepmother didn't walk down the aisle so we didn't have to worry about that part but I also didn't have to tell anyone where to sit, they just knew.

your right, My Dad is walking my stepmom to her seat then comming back to walk me down. I think my mom was just kind of upset because she was told to sit in the 3rd row. I guess they all really could sit in the same row but I just thought it would be more comfortable for them to have there own row.

I think your mom should be in the second row, your father and stepmother in the third.
At the same time, I think your stepmother should only be escorted down the aisle if you really want her to be.

there is a proper way to do this, if you are interested.
mom sits in the first rown, grandparents in the 2nd, dad in the third. unless, of course, they can get along, in which case switch dad and grandparents. IMO moms go first. grandparents can act as a buffer if needed.

Unless they REALLY don't get along, father should not sit behind the grandparents.

Re: Divorced parents Q?
I have this situation also. I am not having my stepmom escorted down the aisle. My Dad left my mom when I was just 3 weeks old. We see each other at parties and get togethers but we are not close like a normal father and daughter. I definitely want my mom in the 2nd row. I only have my grandma left on my mom's side who I am very close to (my grandpa was going to be the one to walk me down the aisle but he past away 2 years ago) so I am having her sit in the 2nd row also. My Dad will be escorting me (after many nights of debating if I really wanted him too) down the aisle and sitting in the 3rd row.

Kara and Todd is right. Your stepmom can be escorted down by either an usher or groomsman but your dad should not be escorting her down the aisle, that's if YOU want her to be in the procession. If your parents get along they should sit in the same pew. In the pew it should be your mom closest to the aisle, your dad then step mom all in the second pew. If they do not get along then your mom in the second pew and dad and stepmom in the third pew.

Melissa, if your not really close to your dad how about your Mom escorting you down???? Just a thought.

Re: Divorced parents Q?
There are a few things that I took into when it came to determining who would sit where... I am closer with my dad than I am my mom My dad paid for almost half my wedding where my mom paid for my shower and made sure she complained about it non-stop for months And the fact that every favor I asked of my mom she either purposly or not purpously did the exact opposite. So, I decided to give my dad first row and my mom second just for peace of mind, but after a nasty e-mail from my mom about respect and tradition of divorced parents and how the mother sits in the front row, I just decided it was a battle I was not going to fight. My dad being the nonchalant guy that he is said he understood and would respect either decision, so my mom got the first row
(But I'm not still bitter about it )

Re: Divorced parents Q?
My parents are divorced, dad is remarried, mom has been with someone just as long but they're not married. Both parents walked me down the aisle. For my mom's 'fiance' - we needed someone to wheel my grandma down the aisle, so he did that, got her situated, then took his seat. My stepmom was escorted and seated by the 2 best men, who then remained up front. Both sets of parents were supposed to sit in the first row together. (My grandparents decided for some bizarre reason to sit in the first row, so my poor stepmom wound up sitting by herself in the 2nd row! My mom was po'd, but obviously wasn't going make a scene during my ceremony... )
Anyway I think you should have someone else escort your stepmom.
And as a side note, when my sister got married 3 years ago, my parents were not yet getting along, so they sat on separate sides of the aisle. My mom sat with the grooms mom.

Re: Divorced parents Q?
Traditionally, the bride's mother is supposed to sit last, just before the procession begins.
