DIY Calligraphy?

I was thinking of going to the library & taking out books on calligraphy & trying to do it myself....has anyone done their own calligraphy or plan on it?

Is it even possible??

I have been practicing - I did it for our save the dates and it looked just ok...but I think if you have the time to practice, it is definitely something you could do!

Calligraphy is an art. It's like taking out a book on oil painting when you've never done it before and trying to do it yourself. You may have some natural talent but it takes a lot of practice to make it look right. There are angles and alphabets and different nibs and pens and inks involved... it's potentially very complicated. I used to practice in high school and having not done it for 10 years, and without the time to retrain my hand, I didn't even dream of doing my own envelopes.

I know some other girls planned to do this. I don't know how they came out. My feeling is that the closest a person will get who hasn't done it before is, if they have nice handwriting, it'll come out as nice handwriting done in a caligraphy nib... which can look nice, but it won't be super formal calligraphy.
