I'm making my own centerpieces - cylindrical and rectangular glass vases filled with water, orchids, and floating candles. Does anyone have experience with this? Where can I get the materials inexpensively?

Try dollar stores. We got vases for our cocktail tables that were cylindrical and shallow to use to float one flower in water. They were literally $1 and our florist was going to charge over $300 for 15!

Christmas Tree Shop Michael's AC Moore
My cousin got hers at the Christmas Tree shop... they were wide vases that actually held candles, not flowers... they were $10 each!

I ordered 12 vases, 24 candle holders, 12 mirrors and I spent way under $200, I also ordered candles. preserved orchids, and vase fillers.

You should also try the Flower District in Manhattan. I am getting a dozen 5' cubes from B&J Florist for about $60 including tax. My florist is charging $10 a piece to rent them.
If you can't make it to Manhattan then I suggest AC Moore and Michaels. Good Luck!

I am doing almost the exact same thing, but I am using calla lillies :)
I was originally going to DIY my own centerpieces, but ended up getting flowers. I did a trial run, and bought the cylinders from Michaels. Save up the 40% off coupons and buy one at a time. Here's a pic.
