DIY invatations...

so ladies i need some advise... Does it really matter if you printout your own invitations? I had some people tell me that it looks cheap because it doesn't have that 'raised font' and that set the style of your wedding, cheap, now is that true? I have seen some really beautiful DIY invitations in craft stores but I just dont want them to come off cheap looking.... HELP PLEASE

I think everyone is going to have there own opinion. I'm sure if you did it yourself it would come out beautiful noone needs to know its a DIY project. Some people are so shallow.

It doesn't matter if you spend $5.00 or $15.00 on an invitation, people are going to throw them out anyways, diy is the way to go for me

That's ridiculous! I'm having my invitations made and I'm still not getting raised font - raised font costs tons of extra money. I've seen some really nice DIY invitations out there and I don't think they look cheap at all. If you think you can do a good job with them, I say go for it and save yourself the $$.

I think that the DIY kits have come a long way, and I did a lot of research on them before I purchased our kits (which I only did this past weekend). I agree with Stacey, the Brides brand kits at Michaels are really nice. I opened the box to feel the paper and it's nice...not flimsy or anything. The envelopes are on the thinner side, but really...if a guest is paying attention to the quality of an envelope, perhaps they should pick a scab or scratch their @ss, as that would be a more productive way to spend their time.

I think not.

Honestly letterpressed/embossed invitations cost a lot of money. Purchased or DIY. If DIY'ed you need to buy expensive equipment to do it. And honestly you can tell yourself you'll use it after the wedding. But would you really?
And who cares?! Seriously, your guests might ooh and ah over it for 5 minutes. Then what's going to happen to the invitation is bottom of paper pile then in the garbage can.

I know I'm being harsh! But it's the truth!

So I say, save the money, IMO.

I think DIY is great because it's all your creation and there will be no other like it out there (unless you copied a design).

We're DIYing with a heavy red cardstock in the middle and vellum on either side. I don't think it will look cheap.

Sorry if I came off mean.

P.S. If you need help I can give you cheap paper supply store suggestions online and in NYC. I got my envelopes from Paper Presentation in NYC and paper from Paper and More in CA. Both were the cheapest I found for what I was looking for. GL!

I did DIY invites for my engagement party and I had family coming up to me asking what invitation place I use and the invites i made were as simple as could be [pictures in album] so i definetly plan on DIY invites for my wedding. As a matter of fact, I got a kit yesterday to work on today just to see how they would come out!

I have seen beautiful invitations ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 minimum order and it actually breaks my heart... because I loooovee them! I like LETTERPRESS but it's expensive too. And there is no way I would spend a lot on invitations (what do I do with the invitations I received anyway?). And I came up with a PHOTO WEDDING INVITATION! It's cheaper, it can be displayed by your friends (one of my friends had a photo collage and she included my photo save the date card!). I had mine ordered & designed ( a trifold one), but I needed extra 2 pages and I don't want to spend more soI did it myself. So far it doesn't look cheap.

I am thinking about DIY invitations and to be honest...people are not going to realize if the invitation was $1 or $10 each....DIY invitations could save you about $500! That's a lot of money to be saved.

I have a pic of my invitation in my album. My girlfriend and I printed them. I ordered the paper and had it cut when I ordered it; then she printed them.

Since I had wanted the design on the actual invite, the company printed the wording for no extra charge.

We even did the tags too.

Everyone loved our invitations; we got a lot of compliments. And we didn't do raised lettering either.

I honestly don't know how many people would even know about raised lettering; and if you can save yourself some $$$ then why not DIY and not do the raised lettering?

Re: DIY invatations...

Who are these people that want the raised font? I guess they have never paid for a wedding! No one is going to notice! And I'm of the opinion that anyone who says anything about your wedding being cheap does not deserve to be there! Engraved invitations could be half someones budget! And letterpress (thought as the cheaper alternative) still costs an arm and a leg! And even if someone has the money, that money could be spent somewhere else more memorable.

I think I'm going to use vistaprint or 123print, or any of those cheap sites! I don't want to spend more than $200 on invitations that will wind up thrown out, the only one that will probably kept will be your own copy! I just think I will not have the patience to get the printer to work right (I'm always fighting with my printer), so I'm just going with cheaper printed ones. I've seen ones that cost a lot but were so simple that they didn't look it.

IMO diy invites can look even nicer than printed ones. I got lots of samples of invites and the quality of the paper alone on lots of them were terrible i thought!

i really liked the diy invites i got from michaels (bride's...light blue and ivory) they are pockets and would've prob cost almost $5 each at a printer. i think they wound up costing me about $1 each and i'm thrilled with the quality
