We are having a nice wedding and i was looking for an area to cut some cost so i was thinking of making my own invitations. Do you think thta gives off a bad first impression? Does anyone have other areas where to cut and it's not to noticable?

Re: DIY invitations do they look Cheap
I think that DIY inviations can look GREAT, if they are done nicely. I've seen alot of people on this site do DIY invitations- try doing a search and looking at their's. They really do look good. You can also DIY programs, centerpieces, favors, table #s, ring bearer pillows, flower girl baskets, OOT and bathroom baskets, cardboxes. Look on the DIY board- people post alot of their DIY creations and they look great!

Re: DIY invitations do they look Cheap
I made mine and they came out better than I could have imagined.
I have a bunch of pictured in my DIY photo album. DIYs
Oh and someone asked my stepmom if I had them done and she told them that I had them done somewhere. I was impressed because someone thought they were professional, but I wanted everyone to know that I did them!!!

In many cases yes, but not always. It depends on the quality of the paper you use (heavy cardstock v. thin flimsy paper), the cuts you make (paper cutter with a clean edge or precut paper v. uneven scissor cuts), the adhesive you use (scrapbooking tape that is invisible and lies flat, or did you use glue that left bumps under the paper) and finally your fonts (do they look like computer fonts or are they elegant fonts?)
it's possible to make them look awesome and not cheap at all (some great examples on this site) but IMO the majority of them do look cheap and homemade (font and construction are the big 2 that stand out to me)

I couldn't have said this better if I had typed it myself.
Honestly, even some of the beautiful DIY invitations I've seen on here were a little lacking with the font sizing and font choices made.
Also, I have seen too many DIY invites where the wrong things are capitalized, and punctuation is incorrect according to social stationery standards.

If you do them right they won't look cheap. I made my own and people couldn't tell, they thought it was professionally done. However, I will say it cost me just as much as store bought invitations and if I could do it again I'd save myself the headache and just buy invitations.

I've seen some very pretty DIY invitations and think it's a GREAT way to cut costs. We're making our own programs and placecards to cut costs.

I agree. They can be done so well nowadays they look like you paid someone hundreds to do them. But it will depend on the materials you use. There's a new line of DIY invites at Michaels by Brides Magazine that are stunning!!

depends on how its done and what type of paper you use. I made my own invitations and dont think they looked cheap, most ppl didnt believe i made it myself.
I also put them in a box, and put a ribbon around the box when mailing it out and had hand calligraphy done on the outside for addresses
