Hi! So we have our date and venue all set (9/2/12 at Riviera in Massapequa)...but at this point that is about it! To make things tougher - we are planning an LI wedding from California so we can't meet with any vendors until Christmas and we really want to have vendors booked for the most part by then.
Right now my main uncertainty is the DJ. I am not really sure what is a good price and since so many DJ websites just look kind of iffy/many reviews I find are by single-review users (which seems a little fishy). Just wondering what DJs anyone would use or recommend against? Price quotes?
We are looking for a just regular fun party feel (not like a club, not boring). We'll have a mix of guests as far as age goes- with the majority being in their 20s. Definitely someone that will get people dancing without being over-the-top. Riviera has a dark wood interior, so we will probably need uplighting. I would like someone who will come for the ceremony and CH, even just to play CDs/use sound equipment.
Ok - I think that sums it up. Seriously any info would be a huge help! I really would like to keep it at $1500 max, which seems reasonable to me but I, of course, would not like to sacrifice quality either.

We are getting married there as well and are using After Hours. They are great to work with and although their prices are listed a la carte, he comes down a ton if you upgrade your packages. We got so much for nearly half the price as what it should've been!! Let me know if you need help with anything else!! We have most of our major vendors booked. Good luck with the hunt!!

I'm using Variety Music. Ray is great. I first used them 10 years ago for my parents 25th anniversary and have not used another DJ since. I've passed his name along.

We used After Hours - we used uplighting through them and had the steel drum band at cocktail hour through them too.
We were really able to personalize our package and get everything we wanted w/ in our budget.
We met w/ 2 other companies and they couldn't do that.
Phil has worked many weddings at the Riviera so he know how they opperate. I wrote about them in my review.

Im also getting married at the Riviera (9/28/12!) and looking for a DJ. I heard good things about variety music, but I really really really want it to be classy and cheese free (no lighys, give aways, games etc). We got a DVD from After Hours that sort of scared me... how were they in 'real' life?

I am booked with Genesis Events and I love them even more every time I see them at a showcase

I live out of state and I agree that a DJ is very hard to get a feel for when you're not there, and it's super important for the wedding atmosphere! Luckily I was on LI this past weekend and we met with Tommy's Tunes. They were exactly what we wanted and sound like what you want too. Low key, great music but nothing clubby or cheesy. They didn't try to push sales and they seem like a high end DJ for a great price! Definitely look at them!

I just actually looked at LI sound and Variety today with my FH and both were a little out of our budget which was originally $2000-$2500. With plasma screens and montages, and some uplighting, it was close to $3000 and up, but if you're not adding the extras on then it was a lot less. They both are very reputable and we saw LI sound at a showcase and they seemed about right for your situation.
Btw...we're getting married 9/3/12 at the Riviera!
