Are you hiring a band or a DJ? I'm not asking for me, as we are going DJ for multiple reasons ($$ being the biggest lol). My dad is up my butt about it saying that if we could afford it, FH and I would pick a DJ which is just not true! A band is nice, but we just have too many obscure songs we want played that would be difficult to get out of a live band. Soooo.. just for fun.. which do you want?? Are you making your choice because of cost or entertainment reasons?

DJ or Band?
I'm just really not a fan of wedding bands. I mean, there are some talented people out there, don't get me wrong. I just don't want, essentially, a cover band at my wedding. I want the actual song. Like, my wedding song is a Billy Joel song. I don't want to dance to a cover of that song, and unless Billy is going to come in and sing it himself (here's to hoping?), I want the actual track of him signing played.

we actually kinda got both lol
we have a live singer who will do keys and vocals during the downtimes of the reception- we booked with bravura :)
we also have a jazz trio for cocktail hour through bravura- paul is the singer for both and is also our MC and his voice is sooooooooooo amazing- especially when he sings in italian

We are having a DJ. We decided this because it is definitely cheaper and FH and I have such different tastes in music that a band would never be able to fulfill our wishes. I agree that I don't want a band covering a song. I want to hear the song how it's supposed to sound. I always said if we did have a band, I would have our first dance played on an ipod because I want to hear Jack Johnson sing it, not some random person.

I feel the same. Our song is obscure and not a lot of people know it, and I love the way it's sung by Joshua Radin.

My FFIL used to play in a wedding band (he's been to just about every venue on Long Island, so he has opinions on some of those places lol). He doesn't play anymore, but if I could I would go with a band.
My FH's best friend got married last year and they had a band play. They were actually very good and were my kind of style. Very laid back, played a great mix of songs, and it was two singers, I believe (one female and one male). Considering my FH's best friend has a bit of money, I don't think they would be in our budget.

I love do for party dance atmosphere but our do does add ons of percussionists drummer electric guitar. So we added some of that. This way those that don't dance have some entertainment :)

I love the idea of band (like, really love) but I feel that a DJ is the best option for a range of music genres - especially for modern day dance hits. We compromised and went with an acoustic guitar player for CH :)
