I'm torn here. First off, we are not having any dancing (please don't ask). I've been to a lot of weddings that has Djs and attended only one where they had a band and it really made a difference. IMO, the band was more livelier and added some character to the reception.
FI & I wanted to get a band but as everyone knows, it costs more than a DJ. Here's the thing, my friend has a brother who is a professional DJ and does weddings and he kindly offered his brother's service as a wedding gift... which means it's FREE. the practical side of me says save the band $ for a nice honeymoon but part of me keeps thinking if we have a dj, it'll be boring
Should we just take the FREE DJ? or figure out a way to come up with funds and get the band that we want?
ahhhh. soooo TORN!!!
EDITED: there's no dancing but we would still need a DJ or Band to play music in the background (when people are eating or as filler between toasts/performers/etc). a slideshow would also be shown where ideallyl, if we have a band, they will sing while the slideshow is being played.

well if there is no dancing, imo, the 'lively' band is irrelevant...

I'm a little confused....you said that you are not having dancing...so would it matter if you had a dj or band if you don't dance? I think I may just be confused in your op.

I agree - if there's no dancing then I don't think it really matters... might as well go with the free option!

If there is no dancing at your wedding I am not sure why you would want a 'lively' band? If no dancing, I would go for the Free DJ. I would go with the Free DJ even if there was dancing actually. I just prefer DJs personally.

Go free!!!! You could always contact one of the djs companies and add an entertainer as kind of a compromise.

If there's no dancing then I say just go with teh DJ. Do you really need somethign that lively for people who aren't dancing? What if they get up and dance? Will someone stop them?
If you are really that torn... do half and half. Half free DJ,then half paid band.

Either way I'd go for the free DJ, key word being FREE!

Just another thought that if you are only looking for 'filler' music, you don't necessarily need a full band anyways... you could probably do just a few pieces or maybe a jazz trio or something which would be less expensive than a full band and would give you the feel of live music that you like.

if you arent having dancing, then i would say GO FOR THE BAND. especially when ppl are sitting most of the night, i thnk its nice to look over and enjoy live music.
since there is no dancing you really dont need a DJ to get the party going...so i kinda think whats teh point, you can just have an ipod do the same job
so i say GO FOR THE BAND!!! (i love live music and i wish we couldve had a bandddddd)

I would do DJ either way. They can go either way whether SOME people want to dance, or no one wants to dance. You pick the music, right?

Free DJ. If you want some add some extras 'singer, keyboardest, sax player' and have a combo of the 2 but w/o the expense of a full band.

Def the DJ if there is no dancing. Save the money for elements that are more important to you.
